Overview
Newton Creek Campground offers a quintessential Rocky Mountain experience within the Shoshone National Forest. Located along the scenic corridor between Cody and Yellowstone, this campground provides a peaceful retreat under a dense canopy of Douglas fir and Engelmann spruce. It serves as an ideal base for those looking to immerse themselves in the unspoiled wilderness of Wyoming while remaining within a short drive of world-class museums and parks. The atmosphere here is one of quiet contemplation and deep connection with the natural world.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 37 miles west of Cody, the park sits at an elevation of nearly 6,000 feet along the North Fork of the Shoshone River. The landscape is characterized by dramatic volcanic rock formations and lush riparian zones. Visitors are surrounded by the Wapiti Valley's rugged beauty, where the sounds of the adjacent Newton Creek provide a soothing natural soundtrack. The high-elevation air remains cool even in mid-summer, providing a refreshing escape for travelers passing through the high desert regions.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional National Forest site, the amenities focus on a rustic, back-to-basics experience. The park offers the following features for visitors:
- Potable water and vault toilets are accessible at convenient locations throughout the campground loops.
- Each individual site is thoughtfully integrated into the forest and equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and fire ring.
- The park provides communal trash collection and maintains a footprint designed to minimize impact on the environment.
Because the park is situated in active grizzly bear habitat, strict food storage regulations are enforced to ensure a safe environment for both visitors and the local bear population.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The campground is a prime staging area for exploring the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park, located just a short drive away. AMBER
No cell service, no electric, water, sewer or dump. Allow only hard sided campers due to bears. Quiet campground, nice sites w most by river. Most sites were well shaded and could fit very small to larger maybe 40ft RVs. Close to road, could hear cars on hwy often. Gravel roads, windy and really dusty when we were there. It's down behind a mountain so seems dark early and sun doesn't get warm until later morning. Campground host was pleasant, cost was $15/night.

Shade trees most ever space. 3 pull through spaces, many back in spaces. Can accommodate most any HARD SIDED rig set up for no electricity, no water, no cell service. Quite "first come first served" campground. This is bear country.
