Shoshone/Wapiti
Overview
The Shoshone/Wapiti area represents the rugged, authentic spirit of Wyoming. Located within the nation's first national forest, this region offers a scenic retreat for RVers traveling the historic Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway. The atmosphere is defined by dramatic volcanic rock formations and the rushing waters of the Shoshone River. This corridor serves as a tranquil alternative to the busier hubs nearby, providing a peaceful environment where the natural landscape takes center stage for every visitor.
Location & Surroundings
Positioned roughly halfway between the vibrant town of Cody and the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park, the Wapiti Valley is a high-elevation marvel. The surroundings are characterized by the jagged peaks of the Absaroka Wilderness and sprawling evergreen forests. Because it is nestled within a major wildlife corridor, the setting feels exceptionally wild. RVers will find themselves surrounded by steep canyon walls and expansive western vistas that change color beautifully as the sun sets over the valley.
Amenities & Park Features
While many sites in the Shoshone National Forest favor a more primitive style, the Wapiti area provides essential comforts for the modern traveler. Visitors can often find electric hookups at designated campgrounds, alongside standard features like picnic tables and fire rings. Due to the active local ecosystem, strict bear-aware storage protocols are a primary feature of staying here. Most locations are designed to accommodate hard-sided RVs, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience in the heart of grizzly country.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The area is a paradise for those who love the outdoors and Western history. A short drive east leads to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, a world-renowned museum complex. To the west, the wonders of Yellowstone await, including high-alpine lakes and geothermal features. Locally, the Buffalo Bill Reservoir provides ample opportunities for windsurfing, fishing, and boating. Hiking trails abound throughout the Wapiti Ranger District, offering varying levels of difficulty for trekkers looking to explore the backcountry.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for travelers who prefer a rustic mountain experience over a structured resort environment. It is perfectly suited for photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, and those who enjoy the solitude of the forest. If you are an adventurous RVer looking for a strategic home base near Yellowstone without the heavy crowds, the Shoshone/Wapiti area offers the perfect balance of accessibility and untamed natural beauty for your next Wyoming road trip.

Leaving Yellowstone or heading to it this is a really nice campground. The host from Nebraska has the cleanest vaults for use that I've ever seen! Half the campground is dry camping and the other half has power for an RV.

RV fresh water fill up by info sign at entrance. Pit toilet, garbage. Beautiful campground, camp host was friendly. Spaced nicely apart. Fire ring, picnic table, some sites have electric. No dump available. Dump at city of Cody free dump station on Lt Childers street, by Veterans Memorial. We watched Bighorn sheep on the rocks across Shoshone River. Not far from Cody. Had a great time there. Can’t wait to come back!!

Usfs website says closed, but this campground is definitely open. A loop with electric sites, and a loop without. There's a nice bridge and trail beyond the river. There is a fishing day use/parking area as well.

Decent campground, doesn't have a shower house though. Little far from Yellowstone, but it works! The bridge and the river next to the campground are beautiful!

This is a very nice campground along the Shoshone River. Sites are well separated. Some sites have power and water, others don't. The campground is not open in winter.
