Sibbald Lake Campground
Overview
Sibbald Lake Campground offers a quintessential Alberta foothills experience, blending natural beauty with easy accessibility. Located within the Sibbald Area of Kananaskis Country, this provincial park facility provides a serene escape for those looking to disconnect. The campground is characterized by its lush forests of pine and spruce, creating a secluded atmosphere for each campsite. While it leans toward a rustic camping experience, the well-maintained grounds and proximity to the water make it a popular choice for families and nature enthusiasts seeking a peaceful retreat away from the city bustle.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away in the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies, the park is situated about 45 minutes west of Calgary near Bragg Creek. The landscape is dominated by rolling foothills and dense forests, offering a buffer from the wind and providing ample shade. The centerpiece is Sibbald Lake, a calm body of water that reflects the surrounding peaks and timber. The area is known for its diverse wildlife, where visitors might spot deer, elk, or a variety of migratory birds. The elevation provides cooler summer temperatures, making it a refreshing destination during the peak of July and August.
Amenities & Park Features
As a provincial recreation area, the amenities focus on preserving the natural environment. The park features 134 sites suitable for both tents and RVs, though it is important to note there are no power or water hookups available on-site. Facilities include clean pit toilets, hand-pumped water, and a central firewood sales station for evening campfires. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring. There is a convenient boat launch for those bringing non-motorized watercraft, and several day-use areas provide space for groups to gather near the lakeshore.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this region. Sibbald Lake is regularly stocked with trout, making it a favorite spot for shoreline fishing or quiet paddling in a canoe. Hikers and mountain bikers can explore an extensive network of trails, such as the Sibbald Flats Trail or the more challenging Ole Buck Mountain loop. For a change of pace, the charming hamlet of Bragg Creek is a short drive away, offering local artisan shops and cozy cafes. The nearby Elbow Falls provides a stunning natural spectacle perfect for afternoon photography.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for RVers who prefer boondocking and self-contained travel over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families who enjoy traditional campfire evenings and simple outdoor activities like fishing and hiking. Because of its proximity to the city, it serves as an excellent weekend getaway for Calgarians or a first stop for those heading deeper into the Rockies. If you value privacy, forest views, and a quiet night under the stars without the hum of heavy machinery, this park will fit your travel style perfectly.

Sibbald Lake Campground is a great choice if you want an easy escape into nature without driving deep into the Rockies. The sites are tucked into the forest, offering plenty of shade and privacy, and the lake itself is just a short walk away—perfect for fishing, paddling, or a calm evening by the water. The campground has basic amenities like fire pits, picnic tables, and outhouses, making it simple but comfortable. The real highlight is the setting: peaceful, family-friendly, and surrounded by gentle trails where you can spot wildlife or enjoy a morning stroll. It’s also one of the first campgrounds you reach when heading west from Calgary, so it’s super convenient for a quick weekend trip. If you’re looking for a quiet, easy-to-reach spot with a true backcountry feel, Sibbald Lake is the way to go.

Wow! What an amazing campground just an hour’s drive from Calgary! No network, no screens just pure, vintage life. It felt so refreshing, especially for the kids to disconnect and truly enjoy nature. We absolutely loved every moment of it! 🌲🔥⛺️

If you don't want crowds, want to book last minute, don't want a long drive from Calgary and like a quiet camping experience, this is the campground for you! There is NO lake, NO potable water (there is water for washing dishes though), NO power, NO cell service (15m drive to cell service). All this tends to keep people away. But it's huge! The camp sites are very large and well treed. There are pull through camp sites. There used to be a lake but it's gone now. There was plans for an amphitheatre (see attached map) but that never happened. It's the campground time forgot... which can be a blessing. Kids had a great time just chilling in the camp site with a wood fire (a rare opportunity these days), playing in the playground or playing in the woods. Note: Many of the "interpretive exhibits" on the map no longer exist.

Nice campground with no cell service. We stayed at A50 and were able to fit a 9 person tent, 6 person tent and 2 vehicles, we had plenty of room. I’d definitely recommend this site if you like having lots of room. Close walk to the washrooms. Only downside is that the main office opens at 4pm to buy firewood.

We camped here a couple weeks ago for the first time. What an amazing little campground. All the same amenities as some of the larger camp grounds. But off the beaten trail somewhat and certainly off the grid! The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The campsites are all different sizes and shapes. Lots of tree cover for shade. We will definitely be back.
