Sierra/Deer Creek
Overview
Sierra and Deer Creek campgrounds provide a quintessentially rustic experience in the heart of the Sierra National Forest. Located near the scenic shores of Huntington Lake, these sites offer a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape deep into the California high country. The atmosphere is profoundly quiet and shaded, defined by a dense canopy of fir and pine trees that keep the area refreshed even during the peak of the summer season. Because of the high elevation, the air remains crisp and clean, providing a stark contrast to the heat of the Central Valley below. This is a place where the sounds of the wind through the pines replace the noise of the city.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Lakeshore, California, at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet, the location is a true haven for mountain enthusiasts. To reach this destination, travelers navigate the winding and scenic Highway 168, which climbs steeply through the mountains. The campgrounds are nestled within a rugged forest landscape, offering immediate proximity to the deep blue waters of Huntington Lake. This high-altitude setting ensures that every campsite feels immersed in nature, surrounded by the granite peaks and lush greenery that the High Sierra region is famous for. The proximity to the water makes it a prime spot for those who enjoy a lakeside breeze.

Visitors can spend their days sailing or powerboating on Huntington Lake, which is celebrated for its reliable afternoon thermal winds and excellent trout fishing. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the nearby Kaiser Wilderness offers a vast network of trails ranging from moderate walks to challenging mountain climbs. Additionally, the China Peak Mountain Resort is just a short drive away, offering seasonal activities such as mountain biking and scenic chairlift rides. For a family-friendly excursion, the hike to Rancheria Falls is a local favorite that rewards travelers with a beautiful cascading waterfall.
Who This Park Is Best For

This campground was amazing. It’s only 14 sites so it felt very cozy. Each campsite had a fire pit with a grate, a picnic table, and a bear box. There is also a general store, restaurant, and saloon on the grounds walkable from the campground. The lake was gorgeous and so clean! We had a great time and definitely would come back

One of my favorite campgrounds on the western Sierra. Not too far from Fresno and about 2:45 from Bakersfield. The lake is beautiful and we try to get the lakefront sites to enjoy the water.

Pretty sure this is one of my favorite places on earth. An absolute beauty of a hidden gem in the Sierras. I have lived all around the world and around the country and Huntington Lake is one of the most special places I hold in my heart. Absolutely recommend.
