Sierra/Dinkey Creek

Overview

Sierra/Dinkey Creek Campground provides an authentic wilderness experience within the Sierra National Forest. Located near the town of Shaver Lake, California, this destination is defined by its towering ponderosa pines and the soothing sounds of the nearby creek. Travelers come here to escape the hustle of city life and immerse themselves in a high-elevation forest setting that feels worlds away from modern distractions. This park offers a classic camping experience that emphasizes natural beauty and serenity above all else.

Location & Surroundings

Sitting at an elevation of approximately 5,700 feet, the park is nestled in a valley carved by the water. The surrounding landscape features massive granite rock formations and lush meadows typical of the Central Sierra region. Because it is situated just a short drive from the shores of Shaver Lake, visitors enjoy a cooler climate during the summer months while remaining surrounded by dense evergreen canopies. The proximity to the creek allows for refreshing afternoons by the water while enjoying the crisp mountain air.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest-style park focused on a rustic experience rather than modern luxury. While you will not find high-speed internet or resort-style facilities here, the campground offers essential amenities including vault toilets and potable water spigots distributed throughout the camping loops. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and fire ring, making it ideal for evening gatherings. RVers should be aware that this is primarily a dry camping location, so coming prepared with full tanks is recommended for a comfortable stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

One of the most popular activities for visitors is exploring the historic Dinkey Creek Bridge, a picturesque stone structure perfect for photography and history buffs. For those willing to drive a short distance, the McKinley Grove of Giant Sequoias offers a rare chance to see some of the world's largest trees in a peaceful, secluded setting. Additionally, Shaver Lake is located nearby, offering ample opportunities for boating, fishing, and kayaking for those who want to spend a day on the open water.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize tranquility and mountain scenery over on-site digital amenities. It is a favorite for families who enjoy traditional outdoor activities like fishing, wading in the creek, and storytelling around a campfire. If you are looking for a mountain retreat where the primary entertainment is the great outdoors and the sound of the wind through the pines, this location is an excellent choice for your next California adventure.

Update: was contacted by supervisor and they are gonna process a refund. I have changed the one star to five stars. I really appreciate their time and assistance in this matter. Have heard nothing but good things about area. Made reservations before fire got way to close...requested refund minus late cancellation fee...was told by recreation.gov that I would receive a refund less that fee...then the campground facilities said I couldn't get a refund at all. Don't understand why...when I called to ask about fire...gentleman on phone was discouraging and stated...you know it's really smoky up here. I am just very disappointed. I don't think my request was unreasonable. Plus they are under an evac warning and if we had to leave in a hurry I would lose all my camping gear that I have spent years acquiring. Does not make sense.

Great campground, in a beautiful location, been camping here for years…but definitely not peaceful anymore! Seems everyone has a generator now, and will run them 4-5 hours at a time, in the mornings and late afternoon. All you hear is engine noise! We camped next to two guys in an older RV, and their onboard gen blasted right into our camp multiple times a day, so we had to keep our trailer closed up and was so loud it would echo throughout the campground. And dog barking! Everyone has dogs and just lets the bark excessively, with zero consideration for others. And our camp host did nothing. I’d suggest setting generator hours between 11 and 1pm ONLY for people to charge their batteries and/or precook their dinner. And then have a strict excessive no-barking policy, if they can’t control their dog barking, more than 2 complaints, would be forced to leave.

We do not camp here but mainly drive up to swim and fish for the afternoon. There are multiple swim holes and fish are stocked through early summer. You can enjoy a picnic here or hike a ways to find your own secluded hole. Keep in mind this place is popular in summer but if you arrive early you have a pick of spots. The fishing can be fair to incredible depending on the time of year. I have caught some rather large brook trout in here as well as brown trout and rainbow trout are the main stay. I suggest bringing lifejackets because some holes are rather deep.

I visited pre Memorial Day weekend and the campground was wide open. The campground is well maintained with flush toilets and water in the restrooms. Campsites were distributed in a way where you are not on top of each other. Great experience.
