Silver Lake
Overview
Silver Lake State Park offers a classic Vermont camping experience in the heart of the historic village of Barnard. Established in 1955 on the former farm of Charles B. Danforth, this 34-acre park is centered around the pristine 84-acre Silver Lake. It provides a tranquil atmosphere where the landscape transitions from rolling pastures to dense forest, making it a beloved destination for those seeking a traditional outdoor getaway without the distractions of modern life. The park maintains a peaceful, quiet vibe that honors its long-standing agricultural roots.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Windsor County, the park sits directly across from the historic Barnard General Store, adding a touch of small-town charm to the wilderness. The lush Green Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop for the shoreline, where clear waters invite daily exploration. The surrounding area is characterized by winding country roads and scenic vistas, offering a peaceful retreat that feels secluded while remaining conveniently accessible to local village amenities and the picturesque central Vermont countryside.
Amenities & Park Features
The park caters to RVers who appreciate a dry-camping experience, as there are no hookups available at the 40 campsites. Facilities are well-maintained and include a sanitary dump station, flush toilets, and hot coin-operated showers. The sandy swimming beach is a major draw for summer travelers, complemented by a large playground and a seasonal snack bar. Travelers can also take advantage of on-site boat rentals, including kayaks, canoes, rowboats, and pedal boats, to explore the quiet, motorized-restricted waters.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, visitors are just a short drive from the historic town of Woodstock, Vermont, known for its charming architecture and local boutiques. You can explore the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park or visit the Billings Farm and Museum for a glimpse into local agricultural history. For nature enthusiasts, the nearby Quechee Gorge offers stunning views and hiking trails, while the local village of Barnard provides a quintessential New England experience for an afternoon stroll and locally sourced treats.
Who This Park Is Best For
Silver Lake State Park is ideal for families and nature lovers who prefer a rustic, unplugged camping style. Because the sites do not offer electricity or water hookups, it is best suited for self-contained RVers or those who enjoy a back-to-basics approach to travel. It is a perfect choice for travelers who prioritize water activities like swimming and fishing, as well as those wanting a central home base for exploring the scenic beauty and historical landmarks of central Vermont.

We really enjoyed this place. The lake was awesome! The sites were really well maintained. The facilities were really nice. Just know that you need to buy coins at the check in lodge for showers. The price was very reasonable though! Service with AT&T went in and out during our time there, making things a little challenging but a little extra planning mitigated that issue. Overall, great place to stay!!

This is a wonderful day use area for family and friends. Great beach and swimming. Boat rentals or bring your own, no motors.

Beautiful lake, lots of well maintained amenities, a great dock to jump off and friendly staff. Dog friendly too (just keep the dog off the beach).

Had a blast here. Small beach but a large grass area to relax on. A great spot to go swimming also with a playground 100 feet away. Lot soft people kayaking and having fun all around.

Beautiful state park. Nice showers, and clean bathrooms. Playground was great and boat rentals were affordable. They also have a concession stand down by the lake!
