Sinks Canyon

Overview

Sinks Canyon State Park offers a unique geological experience where the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River vanishes into a limestone cavern. It is a scenic, rugged destination located in the foothills of the Wind River Mountains. Unlike luxury resorts, this park provides a quiet, natural setting where the sound of the water and towering canyon walls define the atmosphere. The Visitor Center provides excellent context on the local geology and wildlife before you head out to explore the rocky terrain.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just six miles southwest of Lander, Wyoming, the park sits at the base of the Wind River Mountains. The canyon is known for its dramatic limestone cliffs and diverse wildlife, including mule deer and golden eagles. Travelers arriving here will find themselves surrounded by high-desert flora and rugged mountain scenery, offering a distinct sense of isolation. The transition from the high desert to alpine forest occurs rapidly as you move up the canyon road toward the higher elevations.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features two main campgrounds, Popo Agie and Sawmill, which cater to those seeking a rustic camping experience. Facilities are simple, including vault toilets, fire rings, and sturdy picnic tables. While there are no sewer or water hookups available for individual sites, the park provides access to fresh drinking water at specific stations. RVers should note that sites are best suited for smaller to mid-sized rigs, making it an intimate way to connect with the Wyoming wilderness without the distractions of modern technology.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Visitors should not miss the Sinks and the Rise, where the river disappears and reappears in a trout-filled pool downstream. For active travelers, the park boasts miles of scenic trails, including the popular path to the Popo Agie Falls. Key activities include:

  • Exploring the Visitor Center geological exhibits.
  • Fishing for trout at the Rise.
  • Scaling the world-class climbing routes throughout the canyon.

Additionally, the nearby town of Lander offers charming local shops and craft breweries for a post-hike reward.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and photographers who prioritize scenery and recreation over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for dry campers and smaller RV owners who want to explore the Wind River Range without the large crowds of major national parks. If you enjoy hiking, world-class climbing, and a tranquil mountain atmosphere, Sinks Canyon offers an essential stop on any Wyoming road trip adventure.

Always happy faces and helpful humans at this organic gem in Orem Utah. Best Salt On Earth is right! Fresh Start Hygiene appreciates you all! Delicious organic food in the restaurant is such a beautiful treat. And the free electrolytes given out is just a beautiful addition. I highly recommend their products and organic tallow!

Sinks Canyon, Wyoming This is a gorgeous state park at high elevation so it gets cool at night. All the campsites and yurt sites have views and/ or beautiful surroundings. The hiking trails are well marked and mostly dirt w/ some rocky areas and elevation changes. There’s a scenic drive loop above Sinks Canyon that’s part paved/ part gravel w/ views, lakes and dispersed camping. We loved this place !

The canyon is easily accessible by a paved road ,it's an easy walk around the creek with a spectacular viewing spot where you can observe pretty big trout fish swimming around the creek.

This free national park is absolutely worth a visit! The views are stunning and perfect for anyone who loves nature and scenic landscapes. There's also a visitor center on-site that sells souvenirs — a nice touch if you want to bring something home or support the park. Considering it’s free to enter, this place is definitely a hidden gem. Whether you're just passing through or planning a longer stop, it's a great spot to soak in some beautiful scenery and enjoy a peaceful break.
