Siuslaw/Spinreel Campground

Overview

Spinreel Campground serves as a premier destination for those looking to experience the rugged beauty of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Located just north of North Bend, this facility is widely recognized for its direct dune access, making it a central hub for motorized recreation. Unlike traditional resort-style parks, Spinreel offers a more rustic camping experience where the natural sounds of the Pacific coast blend with the spirit of outdoor adventure.

Location & Surroundings

Situated within the Siuslaw National Forest, the campground is nestled between the Pacific coastline and Tenmile Creek. The surrounding landscape is dominated by massive shifting sand dunes and coastal pine forests. Its location in the southern end of the dunes provides a unique transition from lush riparian zones to the vast, open expanses of the sand, offering visitors a truly diverse natural setting that feels worlds away from the city.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is designed primarily for utility and access to the terrain. It features paved parking spurs suitable for various RV lengths, though visitors should be prepared for a dry-camping experience as there are no hookups. Essential facilities include vault toilets and potable water stations located conveniently throughout the loops. Each site is equipped with a fire ring and picnic table, while the designated OHV staging area allows travelers to transition from their campsite to the dunes seamlessly.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The main draw is undoubtedly the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, where miles of sand are open for exploration and motorized sports. Beyond the dunes, visitors can enjoy fishing in Tenmile Creek or exploring nearby coastal hiking trails. A short drive south leads to North Bend and Coos Bay, where you can find the Coos Art Museum, local seafood dining, and essential shopping for supplies before heading back to your basecamp in the forest.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for off-road vehicle enthusiasts who prioritize location and trail access over luxury amenities. It is a perfect fit for families and groups traveling with ATVs or sand rails who want to be in the heart of the motorized action. Travelers seeking a primitive, adventurous atmosphere will appreciate the proximity to the dunes, while those looking for a functional basecamp for coastal exploration will find it perfectly situated.

We stayed for 5 days and our group was all together. It was in a great location to access trails. The spaces could be a little wider, but can still park out 34' fifth wheel and truck. It was tight though. Great place to camp close to the ocean.

Beautiful environment. Unreal views. Underfunded park. Minimal amenities. Lots of litter. I'm spending a week here and it's a good park to camp in for staging to go on the dunes, but that is all. The current park host is going above and beyond to make the park look better but it's obviously an uphill battle.

Do not come here unless you're a dune buggy fanatic. Seriously. I booked a week thinking the sand would be fun for my dog, but I am completely surrounded by loud motors, music, and constant revving of engines. The site would be fine if it wasn't completely exposed to the whole campground. Zero privacy, very loud, but also very beautiful. Update: left after 1 night. For some reason people like to turn on their massive ATVs and just sit in them... My dog wouldn't leave the truck so we left. Never coming back.

It's a nice little campground. Especially for anybody that wants access to the Oregon dunes recreational area. Most of the camping spots have room for your RV/camper and two vehicles. A lot of the campers have UTV side by sides, ATVs, sand rails, and dune buggies. You can drive right off the blacktop into the dunes. There's also a boat launch for small boats.

The recreation area is a nice place for families to ride. The camp host however is terrible. Her name is Karen and she is not a Oregonian. She rude and not friendly. She walks around with ear muffs on because she can’t stand the sound of peoples toys. She ruined our overall experience. This campground has potential if it had a good host
