Siuslaw/Tahkenitch Campground

Overview

Located within the lush Siuslaw National Forest, the Tahkenitch Campground offers a serene escape for RVers seeking a deep connection with the Oregon Coast's natural beauty. This National Forest Service site serves as a primary gateway to the diverse ecosystems found within the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Unlike bustling coastal resorts, this campground provides a quiet, forested setting where the sound of the wind through Sitka spruce and Douglas fir trees takes center stage for every visitor.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just off Highway 101 near Gardiner, Oregon, the campground is perfectly positioned between the expansive Tahkenitch Lake and the rugged Pacific coastline. The environment is defined by towering coastal forests and its extreme proximity to the unique Oregon Dunes. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a landscape where freshwater lakes meet ancient sand dunes, creating a moody and picturesque atmosphere that is truly typical of the Pacific Northwest.

Amenities & Park Features

Tahkenitch Campground caters to those who prefer a rustic, dry-camping experience over modern luxury resorts. The park features paved parking spurs that can accommodate various RV sizes, though there are no utility hookups available on-site. Each campsite is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings under the stars. Facilities include vault toilets and access to potable drinking water, ensuring basic needs are met while maintaining a primitive charm.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities nearby. The Tahkenitch Creek Trail is accessible directly from the campground, leading hikers through marshes and dunes toward the ocean. For those who enjoy being on the water, the nearby lake is renowned for excellent bass fishing and kayaking. Just a short drive away, the Oregon Dunes offer expansive areas for exploration, while the nearby town of Reedsport provides local dining and the Umpqua Discovery Center.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who value solitude and proximity to trailheads over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for birdwatchers, hikers, and photographers looking to capture the raw beauty of the Oregon coast. If you enjoy unplugged camping amidst old-growth timber and do not mind the lack of modern connectivity, this tranquil forest retreat will feel like a hidden gem along your coastal journey.

A nice xampground with private sites. There is a fair amount of highway noise from 101.

Nice place. Good access to trails. Some highway noise. Couple drunks in campsite next to us. Then an apparently drunk man passed out in the middle of the campsite road in middle of night. Not great for feeling really safe for my kids in a tent.

Very beautiful campsite, though the spots were very small and barely fit a single car, I don't know how 8 people and two cars could fit into one spot. It's pretty packed in, you are very close to your neighbors. On the website they listed running water and flush toilets but currently they are closed and have a portapotty. Lots to do around the area, great swimming spots
