Smelt Bay Park
Overview
Smelt Bay Provincial Park offers a serene and secluded escape on the southern tip of Cortes Island. Named after the capelin-like silvery fish that frequent these waters to spawn, the park is celebrated for its expansive pebble beach and legendary sunset views over the Sutil Channel. It provides a peaceful, natural environment for travelers who want to disconnect from the digital world and embrace the rugged coastal atmosphere of the Discovery Islands. This park captures the essence of coastal British Columbia with its mix of forest and sea.
Location & Surroundings
Located in the community of Mansons Landing, the park is nestled within a lush forest canopy that transitions into a wide, sloping shoreline. Reaching this destination is part of the adventure, involving a multi-ferry journey from Campbell River on Vancouver Island through the scenic waters of Quadra Island. The park is surrounded by a coastal Douglas-fir ecosystem, where towering trees provide shade and habitat for local wildlife. The views across the water toward the mountains of Vancouver Island are truly breathtaking on clear days.
Amenities & Park Features
As a provincial park, the facilities here favor a rustic, back-to-nature camping style rather than a resort experience. The park provides 22 vehicle-accessible campsites that can accommodate smaller RVs and camper vans, though there are no on-site hookups for electricity or water. Travelers will find pit toilets and hand-pump water available for use throughout the camping season. Each site is thoughtfully carved into the forest, featuring a heavy-duty picnic table and a dedicated fire ring for evening campfires under the stars.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for visitors is the proximity to the water for swimming and beachcombing, especially when the tide goes out to reveal hidden treasures. Just a short drive or bike ride away, Mansons Landing Provincial Park offers sandy beaches and a freshwater lagoon perfect for a dip. For a taste of local culture, travelers can explore local artisan galleries and organic food stands in the nearby village. The island also features numerous hiking trails that wind through mossy forests and along high bluffs with panoramic ocean views.
Who This Park Is Best For
Smelt Bay Park is specifically designed for adventurous RVers and van-lifers who value solitude and raw natural beauty over modern convenience. It is an ideal spot for those traveling in smaller rigs or camper vans who are prepared for a dry-camping experience. If your travel style involves falling asleep to the rhythm of the tide and spending your days exploring tidal pools, this park is a perfect match. It is a sanctuary for birdwatchers, photographers, and anyone seeking a quiet retreat in the wilderness.

We only visited this park to use the beach, day-use. At low tide there are nice sandy sections that you can easily wade to from shore. The beach is mainly pebbles. A very pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Beautiful, quiet and convenient for a fair price! Added bonus of extremely good cell service and overflow camping right next to the beach. Park attendants were extremely nice and laid back, will be coming back next year 👍

One of the nicest campsites I've been to. Private, out of the way but still easily car accessible (no 4x4 required). Staff were friendly, too. An easy walk to the beach with great views and sandy spots to rest. Water said to boil it, but washrooms (outhouses) were clean. As other reviewers mentioned, some of the sites had average privacy between neighbouring sites. They did plant ferns and shrubs and they're starting to grow in, and soon the sites will be very nicely private, but they are by no means bad right now.

Smelt Bay is very picturesque; the water here is beautiful, calm and incredibly inviting. I could spend all day in the water and looking around the Bay area. I would definitely recommend it for camping or even a day visit.

This is now one of my favorite places on earth for sure. It's comparable to the paradise beaches I've seen in Mexico, it's something out of this world. So so so peaceful. Ranger Tim is really kind too. The bathrooms are super clean, lots of flies tho but hard to keep em out, the camping sites are so nice, space for two tents, maybe three, fireplace and a table. Also you can pick blackberries really close from there. Read the story of the black/orange bench, so sad :(
