Smith Point (Suffolk County Park)
Overview
Located on the eastern tip of Fire Island, Smith Point County Park offers a unique coastal camping experience in Shirley, NY. As a crown jewel of the Suffolk County park system, this destination is renowned for its expansive white sand beaches and rolling Atlantic surf. It provides a rare opportunity for RVers to stay directly adjacent to the dunes, balancing the rugged, natural beauty of the barrier island with essential campground conveniences. It is a place where the ocean breeze and salt air define the daily rhythm for every visitor.
Location & Surroundings
The park sits nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Narrow Bay, providing a stunning backdrop of coastal dunes and salt marshes. Its strategic position at the southern end of the William Floyd Parkway makes it an accessible escape for those looking to leave the suburban sprawl of Long Island behind. Visitors are essentially surrounded by the Fire Island National Seashore, where the rhythmic sound of crashing waves and the sight of migratory birds create a peaceful, immersive environment for nature lovers.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features more than 100 sites, with a significant number offering water and electric hookups that accommodate a variety of RV rigs. On-site facilities include standard restrooms, showers, and a playground, ensuring a comfortable stay for families. A seasonal food concession stand provides quick meals during the busy summer months. One of the park's most distinctive features is the outer beach access, which allows permitted 4WD vehicles to drive onto the sand for remote fishing and shoreline relaxation away from the main crowds.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw at Smith Point, ranging from world-class surfing and saltwater fishing to quiet birdwatching along the bay. Guests often take time to visit the TWA Flight 800 International Memorial, a somber and beautiful site located within the park grounds. A short hike to the west brings travelers into the Otis Pike High Dune Wilderness, the only federally designated wilderness area in New York State. This area offers miles of pristine shoreline and unique maritime flora for explorers to discover.
Who This Park Is Best For
Smith Point is an ideal destination for beach enthusiasts and saltwater anglers who prioritize immediate access to the ocean over high-end resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families seeking an authentic Long Island shore experience and a scenic way to enjoy the coast. Because of the vibrant coastal ecosystem and the exposure to the elements, this park is perfect for travelers who appreciate a rustic, adventurous lifestyle and the simple pleasures of a campfire by the sea.

The beach is clean and serene, however, erosion has certainly taken its toll. There is barely any distance from the boardwalk and dunes to the ocean, even at lower tide.

It was a beautiful space , and tribute to flight 800… Well kept, plantings and words moving!!

County park’s parking lot is a convenient starting point to explore Fire Island wilderness area whose visitor center has only few handicapped parking spots. 18$ parking fee looks a bargain comparing to Hamptons or NYC beaches (but state parks like Jones Beach or Robert Moses offer much lower price point). Beach facilities and vibe of the beach with its live music entertainment at the restaurant made the visit more memorable comparing to rest of LI south shore barrier island beaches.

Beach is clean with lifeguards present during normal hours. Great bar/restaurant right on the beach. Other beach goers are overall friendly. Be sure to check out the TWA flight 800 memorial while you are there. Dogs are welcome. Highly recommend!!!
