Sonoma Coast State Beach/Wrights Beach

Overview

Wrights Beach offers a rare opportunity to camp directly on the edge of the sand along the rugged Sonoma Coast. As a premier destination within the larger Sonoma Coast State Park system, this campground prioritizes a primitive beach experience over modern resort luxuries. It serves as an awe-inspiring base for travelers who want to wake up to the thunderous sound of crashing Pacific waves. Because of its iconic status and prime oceanfront location, it remains one of the most sought-after spots for coastal camping in Northern California.

Location & Surroundings

Located directly off the scenic Highway 1 in Bodega Bay, the park is defined by its dramatic cliffside scenery and vast, windswept shorelines. The campground is nestled between the rolling hills of the coast and the water, offering immediate access to miles of beach. The surrounding landscape features towering sea stacks and vibrant coastal scrub. It is a quintessential Northern California setting where the cool marine layer creates an atmospheric environment perfect for those seeking solitude and natural beauty.

Amenities & Park Features

Wrights Beach is strictly a dry camping destination, meaning there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups at any of the sites. While the park provides a rustic atmosphere, it includes these essential features:

  • Individual picnic tables and heavy-duty fire rings at each site.
  • Flush toilets and access to potable water stations located throughout the campground.
  • Proximity to a dump station and coin-operated showers at the nearby Bodega Dunes area.

The campground is designed to accommodate smaller RVs and trailers, typically with a maximum length of 27 feet, making it essential to verify your equipment size before booking.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless exploration opportunities, starting with the Kortum Trail, a breathtaking bluff-top path that connects Wrights Beach to Blind Beach. A short drive south leads into the heart of Bodega Bay, where you can enjoy fresh local seafood or go birdwatching at the harbor. To the north, Goat Rock Beach offers a chance to see a colony of harbor seals. During the winter and spring months, the nearby headlands serve as excellent vantage points for whale watching during the annual migration.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who value direct access to nature over suburban-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for photographers, beachcombers, and those looking to disconnect from the digital world in a truly wild setting. If you enjoy falling asleep to the rhythm of the tide and do not mind the lack of hookups, Wrights Beach provides an authentic coastal experience. It is best for those with smaller rigs who appreciate a minimalist, adventure-focused travel style.

We were there in a weekend so it was rather busy. But it was beautiful and there were quite a few dog friendly beaches!

The coastline was beautiful, with wide views of the ocean and plenty of beach areas to walk around. It’s great for a peaceful stroll. Although, some parts are a bit rocky, so good shoes help.

I camped at Bodega Dunes Campground in this park. It's a pretty nice campground has all the facilities you need. You can take a walk right out onto the Bayside easily from the campground. You can then walk down the road and get to the harbor and have fish tacos with a view of the harbor. There is a road that also goes down to the ocean side beach. I enjoyed writing my bike around on the roads within the park as well. You can't ride off-road but there are roads that you can ride on. I would go there again.

Beautiful beaches, some beaches are large (1/4”) pebbles that are fun to walk on and glisten shiny when wet. Very interesting and unique. Lots of little treasures for beachcombers
