Sourdough Creek Campground (BLM)

Overview

Sourdough Creek Campground is a quintessential Alaskan federal facility managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Located along the historic Richardson Highway, it offers a rustic and tranquil setting for travelers heading toward the interior or south toward the coast. The park is well-known as a primary access point for the Gulkana Wild and Scenic River, making it a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a true wilderness experience without moving too far from the main road.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Gakona, Alaska, the campground is nestled within a lush forest of spruce and birch. The landscape is dominated by the proximity to the Gulkana River, providing a serene backdrop of flowing water and northern greenery. This area serves as a gateway to the Copper River Valley, offering expansive views of the surrounding mountains and a sense of isolation that characterizes the vast Alaskan wilderness while remaining accessible via the Richardson Highway.

Amenities & Park Features

As a BLM facility, the park focuses on a primitive camping experience. You will find standard amenities such as vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. There are no hookups available, making it ideal for self-contained rigs. Key features include:

  • A developed boat launch for river access
  • Hand pumps for potable water
  • Spacious sites for self-contained RVs

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw here is world-class king salmon fishing and grayling fishing in the Gulkana River. Many visitors use the campground as a staging point for multi-day float trips downriver. Additionally, the park is a reasonable drive from the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park Visitor Center in Copper Center, where you can learn about the largest national park in the United States. Hiking trails and wildlife viewing opportunities are abundant throughout the surrounding BLM lands.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is perfect for the self-sufficient RVer who prioritizes natural beauty over modern luxuries like Wi-Fi or electricity. It is an excellent choice for anglers and rafters who want immediate access to the water. If you enjoy a quiet, forested environment and are looking for an authentic Alaskan boondocking-style experience with the convenience of a managed site, Sourdough Creek provides a peaceful and scenic resting place.

The camp is a mile or two back from the main Richardson highway. Gravel road to the sites. Site trees need to be trimmed up a bit to make it a bit brighter at the sites not to mention to see your surroundings. No hookups but very clean. If you want to feel that you are camping in the middle of Alaska woods this is the place. Be mindful of wildlife.

Beautiful scenery but mosquitoes are terrible, nice camping spots, has bathrooms and trash cans, near Gulkana river.
