South Cumberland/Foster Falls Campground
Overview
South Cumberland State Park offers a rugged retreat at the Foster Falls Campground. Located near the stunning 60-foot waterfall that gives the area its name, this destination provides a raw connection to nature that few other sites can match. It is a premier spot for those who appreciate the scenic beauty of the Cumberland Plateau and the immersive sound of rushing water. This park is not a manicured resort but rather a gateway to some of Tennessee’s most dramatic landscapes and deep forest canopy.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is situated in Sequatchie, TN, perched on the eastern edge of the extensive South Cumberland State Park system. The surrounding environment is characterized by dense hardwood forests and the deep, rocky gorges of the Fiery Gizzard area. It is conveniently located directly at the trailhead for Foster Falls, making it a central hub for exploring the diverse geology and high-altitude vistas of the region. The area feels secluded and wild, providing a perfect escape from urban noise.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic camping destination, Foster Falls Campground features 26 sites designed for those who prefer a traditional outdoor experience. While it offers seasonal bathhouses with showers and toilets, there are no water or electrical hookups available at the individual sites. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, ensuring a cozy evening under the stars. The park maintains a primitive charm that prioritizes the integrity of the natural environment over modern luxuries, making it a true back-to-basics destination.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the breathtaking 60-foot Foster Falls, which is accessible via a short, scenic hike from the camping area. Rock climbers from across the country frequent the area to scale the famous sandstone bluffs, while hikers often challenge themselves on the Fiery Gizzard Trail, which is consistently ranked among the top hiking trails in the United States. Visitors can also explore the nearby Grundy Lakes or take a short drive to see the various overlooks and unique rock formations that define the South Cumberland region.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for travelers who enjoy boondocking-style camping and wish to be steps away from world-class adventure. Because the sites are smaller and lack hookups, it is best suited for tent campers or owners of small trailers and campervans. If you are an outdoor enthusiast looking to disconnect from technology and reconnect with wilderness hiking and climbing, Foster Falls is an exceptional choice for your next Tennessee journey.

Great, great place. New facilities. RV sites are nicely spaced out and it is easy to book. Nice hiking trails adjacent to the campground with beautiful views

Beautiful. If you can climb good, follow the creek and there's pretty mini waterfalls. The water is cold!

The 0.4 mile trek is to the top of the waterfall, which was a trickle when we were there. The bottom of the waterfall is much further away, but worth it. Loys of made made stairs and rock stairs path to the bottom. A suspension bridge is at the bottom prior to the falls. Huge swimming area at the bottom, water was cold but clear and refreshing!

If your legs are out of shape in the least, expect to stop and rest a few times. It's like stairs. BUT MAN!!!! it's beautiful once you get to the bottom. Maybe next time I'll get to swim. It has rained us out both times we have been. Be sure to check the weather before you go.

We traveled from Cumberland State Park here to see the water fall. If we'd been prepared, we would have had swimwear to actually go and swim. It looked fantastic!
