South Higgins Lake

Overview

South Higgins Lake State Park is a premier destination for RVers seeking the crystal-clear waters of one of Michigan’s most celebrated inland lakes. Located in Roscommon, the park spans nearly 1,000 acres and offers a massive lakeside campground with over 400 sites. Known for its distinct marl bottom that gives the water a tropical turquoise hue, this park serves as a lively summer hub for water enthusiasts and families looking for a classic, high-quality Michigan outdoor experience.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the southern shore of the 9,600-acre lake, the park is bordered by the Cut River, which connects Higgins Lake to Marl Lake. While the Higgins Lake side is bustling with activity, the park also encompasses the quieter Marl Lake area across the road. This section provides a more serene landscape with miles of hiking trails that wind through mature forests, offering a stark contrast to the high-energy lakefront.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for modern RVers, offering spacious sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp electrical service available at most locations. Visitors have convenient access to modern restrooms, hot showers, and a large sanitation station for waste disposal. For recreation, the park boasts a half-mile of sandy beach, a boat launch with multiple slips, and a dedicated pet-friendly beach area. On-site boat rentals and a well-stocked camp store ensure that campers have everything they need for a successful day on the water.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Boating and fishing are the primary draws, with the lake’s incredible depths and clarity hosting perch, trout, and pike. Just a short drive away, history buffs can explore the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum to learn about the area's heritage. The nearby town of Roscommon offers charming local dining and craft shops, while Houghton Lake, Michigan’s largest inland lake, provides additional fishing, shopping, and entertainment options just a few miles to the south.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for active families and boating enthusiasts who enjoy a social atmosphere and easy access to the water. Because of its popularity and large number of sites, it is perfect for those who want to be in the heart of the action. It is also a top choice for travelers with dogs, thanks to the rare amenity of a designated beach for pets. If you prefer clear water and vibrant summer energy, this is the spot for you.

The park has a very nice playground for the children. There are restrooms. There's a dog friendly beach area. And there is a pavilion for picnicking. Also plenty of picnic tables scattered throughout. Nice boat launch. And camping

Good sites for group / family camping. Some hidden away as well for a quieter setting. Nice view of the lake / beach area. Pavillion area for picinic outside of camp areas. Overall, it is a beauty of a setting.

Fantastic park! The bathhouses and restrooms are well maintained and new, there's drinking water available at a few spigots and the walk to the lake is relatively short. The only drawback is that some sites back up to a main road which is rather noisy; do yourself a favor and pay attention to the site map.

Great place to go camping and boating. Family-friendly clean water. Nature trials and playgrounds. Can be hard to get a site on certain dates. Been a fav for 40 years.

South Higgins Lake State Park is a fantastic spot for a family outing, whether it’s just the two of you, the kids, or a big extended group. The park is super clean, with well-maintained restrooms and a great park store that offers rentals, ice cream, and food. There are plenty of picnic tables and charcoal grills, perfect for a cookout. Parking is easy, and the water is very shallow near the shore, making it ideal for families with small children. With activities like volleyball and lots of open space to enjoy, it’s a beautiful and relaxing place to spend the day. Highly recommend!
