Great place to hike, bike and birdwatch. The campsites are very clean and in great condition. Very quiet and dark, great place to rest and reset.

If I could live at this park, I would. It’s beautiful, clean, with friendly staff and great amenities. For birders, it would be a destination, especially if you spot turkey, which may not be on someone’s birding list, but would be a treat to see. He k-in is a breeze, and the atmosphere is serene. Also, spend time in the town of Junction, and enjoy Steiner Park. It’s one of the most scenic city parks I’ve ever seen.

A very nice State Park we visited in mid June 2025. We visited during the week and it was not crowded at all. We felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. The river was nice and you could easily tube or just swim. We did a lot of the hiking trails, including the overlook trail, which was quite strenuous, but the view at the end was worth it. Also visited the birding blinds, which were awesome. Well maintained with plenty of bird food and water. The birds flocked in like crazy. Overall, a very good visit and I would return to this State Park again in the future.

One of my family’s favorite state parks! We have been going for five years now.. it’s about a 5 hour drive from Houston, dark sky protected, friendly but thorough park hosts who keep the grounds nice and clean. Not many sites so the park stays quiet and the bathrooms are never crowded. They have some great trails, bird watching and of course the South Llano River! So fresh and pristine, cold and the tubing is just right! The campsites themselves are equipped with covered patio tables and a fire ring with an adjustable grill grate. Some sites are more spacious than others and there are wild hogs, turkeys, and lots of armadillos to keep watch of!

This is one of my top three favorite state parks because it was so quiet which allowed for full relaxation. The trails are well kept and I appreciated being able to do some birdwatching because they have designated areas for this. Additionally the river adds another perk to the park, you can go tubing, fishing, swim, etc. As far as the staff members, overall everybody was nice during check-in but on the night that there was a cold front and hail storm I was seeking help and no one was to be found. The hosts were off duty, the ranger we asked for help at the front that was sitting in his truck was dismissive, and the operator didn’t answer. The good thing was that the park is about 15 minutes from the nearby town so I was able to get help there but in a case of emergency, I think somebody should be accessible. Overall, I really love the park. The sites good but beware of the cacti! Depending on which site you select, you may have more or less room for tents in the grassy area. I recommended the sites in the 40s for larger groups. Go to the observatory if you can, the hike is worth the beautiful view! Oh also there’s plethora of animals! On this trip I saw deer, a roadrunner, a hog, armadillos, canaries, and hummingbirds.
