South Sabula Lake Park (Jackson County Park)

Overview

South Sabula Lake Park offers a distinct camping experience as it is situated within Iowa’s only island city. Managed by Jackson County Conservation, this park provides a tranquil environment for RVers looking to escape the hustle of busier inland destinations. The park is nestled on the southern tip of the island, providing a peaceful retreat where the sound of the water is never far away. It is a well-maintained facility that serves as a gateway to the unique geography of the Upper Mississippi River valley.

Location & Surroundings

The location of South Sabula Lake Park is truly its most remarkable feature. Sabula is a small town entirely surrounded by the Mississippi River, accessible only by bridges or water. The campground sits between the main channel of the river and the calmer waters of South Sabula Lake. Visitors are treated to expansive waterfront views and a unique sense of isolation while still being within walking distance of the small-town charm of the local community.

Amenities & Park Features

This county park is equipped with modern conveniences tailored for RV travelers. It features spacious campsites with electric hookups and level pads to accommodate various rig sizes. Guests have access to a clean shower house, modern restrooms, and a convenient dump station. For those who enjoy being on the water, the park includes a public boat ramp and direct shoreline access for fishing, making it easy to launch a day of river exploration right from your campsite.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Nature enthusiasts will find plenty to do, from fishing for walleye and bass to birdwatching, as the area is a prime spot for spotting American White Pelicans and Bald Eagles. Travelers can explore the historic streets of Sabula or take a short drive across the bridge to Savanna, Illinois, for more dining and shopping options. The nearby Mississippi River flyway provides endless opportunities for photography and wildlife observation throughout the changing seasons.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for anglers and boaters who want immediate access to the river backwaters and the main channel. It also appeals to road trippers seeking a quiet, scenic stopover with a unique geographic twist. If you value a relaxed atmosphere and the natural beauty of the Driftless Area over high-energy resort activities, South Sabula Lake Park provides the perfect balance of comfort and rustic charm for your next Iowa adventure.

My family was in an awful pickle when our car broke down. This site was close to the repair, walkable, with decent showers, bathrooms and stuff to keep the kids entertained. Lawn crews came by and cleaned it up on Tuesday. Everyone was friendly. $25 a night in 2025 with electric and water. Fire wood is $5 for 12 pieces. Pokemon max near by. We saw snapping turtles, water snakes and pelicans of all things. Found some cool rocks at the beach across the way and a place to rent canoes, kayaks, paddle boats up the way too.

We met some friends here for a campfire and roasted marshmallows. The sunset on the lake and the wildlife were amazing. Even the occasional train was charming. We were so happy that this campground accommodated our group. We will be back!

We went out there for the morning just to check it out and watch the birds. There were egrets and pelicans everywhere which was very cool. We liked the campground a lot and will definitely go back to camp.

Small campground with water and electric sites. 2022 rates are $25. (first come first served kind of place, no reservations) the Campground is nestled between South Sabula Lake and the Mississippi. Camp hosts are friendly and helpful. P.S. since you're near the lake, there will be a fishy smell. It's too be expected

Very clean campground. Not a very big place so makes it perfect. U have water all around you. Very nice play ground for kids to play. Showers had warm water too. Camp host was amazing. Feels very safe. Cops drove by at least twice/day and the DNR was ther just checking making sure everybody was safe.
