Southwick Beach

Overview

Southwick Beach State Park provides a quintessential Lake Ontario experience characterized by its expansive shoreline and natural beauty. As one of the most popular state parks in Northern New York, it offers a rare opportunity to camp right alongside a spacious sandy beach. The park is defined by its rolling dunes and freshwater waves, making it a premier destination for those looking to combine RV travel with traditional summer activities. The atmosphere here is relaxed and focused on the outdoors, capturing the spirit of a classic New York summer getaway.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Henderson, NY, the park sits on the eastern edge of Lake Ontario. This region is part of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail, offering travelers scenic drives and access to diverse ecosystems. The park is uniquely bordered by the Lakeview Wildlife Management Area, which provides a massive buffer of protected wetlands and coastal barrier dunes. The surrounding landscape is characterized by its rural charm, offering a quiet escape from more urbanized lakefront locations while ensuring the environment remains serene and undisturbed.

Amenities & Park Features

For RV travelers, the park features over 100 campsites, many of which provide electric hookups for modern convenience. The layout includes essential facilities such as a dump station, hot showers, and a camp store for supplies. Visitors can enjoy well-maintained picnic areas equipped with grills and tables, while children have access to onsite playgrounds. The sites are often shaded or semi-private, allowing for a comfortable setup where you can enjoy the sound of the surf. The highlight, however, is the dedicated swimming area supervised by lifeguards during the peak season.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the beach, the adjacent Lakeview Wildlife Management Area offers miles of nature trails perfect for hiking and birdwatching. History enthusiasts can take a short drive to Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site to learn about local military history. For those who enjoy water sports, the nearby Henderson Harbor is renowned for world-class fishing, particularly for bass and walleye. Paddling is also popular here, as the calm waters of the inland ponds provide a different perspective of the coastal barrier than the open lake.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for families seeking a beach vacation without the coastal crowds. It also caters to nature photographers and outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate the unique flora and fauna found within the dune ecosystems. If you prefer a scenic lakeside retreat over a commercialized resort, Southwick Beach offers the perfect balance of rugged nature and essential camping amenities. It is a top choice for travelers who prioritize proximity to the water and the opportunity to witness spectacular sunsets over the lake each evening.

This is now a favorite beach of mine! The sand is like flour, and there are no rocks to hinder walking miles of this expansive coast. The facility is clean, there is a snack bar with indoor seating, a nice sand rug to walk on to and from the beach, and an outdoor shower to wash away the sand at the end of the day.

Beautiful beach on the lake. Soft clean sand, and the water is pretty shallow for a ways out, so it was great with kids. Well maintained bathrooms, and a small concessions shop.

Another amazing gem of the NYS Park System. Huge sandy beach that is easily accessible with brand new shower and bathroom facilities. Plenty of tables, grills, and shaded places to escape the sun. A must visit summer time beach.
