Sowchea Bay Park
Overview
Sowchea Bay Park offers a tranquil escape on the shores of Stuart Lake. This provincial destination provides a classic northern British Columbia experience, characterized by lush forests and expansive waterfront views. As a smaller provincial park, it maintains a quiet, intimate atmosphere that contrasts with busier resort-style campgrounds. It serves as a perfect base for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Omineca region.
Location & Surroundings
Situated a short drive from Fort St. James and north of Vanderhoof, the park is nestled within a dense coniferous forest. The primary draw is the proximity to Stuart Lake, one of the largest natural lakes in the province. The drive to the park takes visitors through scenic rolling hills and timberlands, offering a true sense of being off the beaten path while remaining accessible via well-maintained roads for those traveling from the main highway.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features 30 vehicle-accessible campsites that are nestled among the trees for privacy. Facilities are kept rustic to preserve the natural environment, providing clean pit toilets and hand-pumped water. While there are no electrical hookups, the park is highly regarded for its concrete boat launch, making it a favorite for visitors bringing motorized boats or kayaks to explore the vast and deep waters of the lake.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Boating and fishing are the primary draws here, with the lake being famous for its rainbow trout and char. For a cultural excursion, the nearby Fort St. James National Historic Site offers a deep dive into the region fur-trading history. Land-based explorers can enjoy casual strolls along the pebbled shoreline or venture into nearby trails that offer glimpses of local wildlife, including eagles and various waterfowl frequenting the bay.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for self-sufficient RVers who prefer a quiet, natural setting over modern resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for boating enthusiasts and anglers looking for easy lake access. Families seeking a peaceful retreat away from digital distractions will appreciate the park simplicity and the opportunity to reconnect with nature in a beautiful, unspoiled lakeside environment.

Gravel sites. Need to work to find level 30 sites all lakefront some are large with trees between. Ours is a 23 ft motorhome so plenty of room. Picnic tables, fireplace a d pit toilets. All are exceptionally clean. May want reservations summer and weekends.

Absolutely beautiful park! Loved that all the sites are right on the lake so I didn't have to go anywhere to go for a dip. Very peaceful as well!

Very nice location with all sites by the water. Fine gravel at the beach and shallow water for kids to play in. Campground only provides water from a disfunctional hand pump located at the far end of the site, bring your own water is a good solution. Clean and almost smell free outhouses in 2 locations. Boat launch close by and in good shape. No warfts available, but boats can be tied up at the beach (watch for waves filling your boat!)
