Spook Cave Campground

Overview

Spook Cave Campground offers a distinctive getaway in the scenic hills of Northeast Iowa. Known primarily for its underground boat tours, the park provides a memorable experience where guests can explore natural rock formations while floating through a cave. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, centered around the unique beauty and geological history of the Driftless Area landscape.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in a lush valley outside of McGregor, IA, the campground is surrounded by towering limestone bluffs and dense forests. This region is geographically unique as it escaped the leveling effects of glaciers, resulting in deep valleys and steep ridges. Travelers will enjoy the scenic drive through the Mississippi River valley, which offers stunning views and a sense of peaceful seclusion from the bustle of city life.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features a variety of spacious RV sites, ranging from full hookups to water and electric options. Beyond the cave tours, visitors have access to a spring-fed swimming lake with a sandy beach and excellent trout fishing opportunities in the nearby stream. Families appreciate the well-maintained playgrounds, clean shower facilities, and a camp store stocked with essentials and souvenirs to make their stay comfortable.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do just minutes from the campground. Pikes Peak State Park offers breathtaking overlooks of the Mississippi River, while the prehistoric earthworks at Effigy Mounds National Monument provide a deep dive into local history and culture. For a charming afternoon, the historic river town of McGregor features unique shops and local dining that capture the spirit of the Upper Mississippi region.

This destination is an ideal choice for family vacationers looking for a mix of education and outdoor recreation. Very well kept campground. Restrooms were clean, staff was friendly, souvenir shop offers tons of options.. BUT, our cave tour was an iffy experience for me. Our tour guide was a younger teenage girl and it showed. She talked about her teenage DRAMA the ENTIRE tour. Sharing stories that are better kept in your personal circle. It was hard to enjoy the experience and actually tune in to what she was saying. I wanted to tune out the drama but wanted to tune into the facts about the cave. Just very annoying honestly. Also had the same experience in the gift shop. A girl in the deli area talking VERY loudly about her personal boy drama. I understand it may be a fun summer job for these teenagers and I want them to have that full, fun camp experience but there is a time and place to be a silly teen and a time and place to be a professional. I enjoyed my time overall and will recommend Spook Cave to anyone looking for a getaway. (Also a train runs right through the tent camping right by the lake. Only went though 1 time while we were there)

Great all around campground. Cabins that i was in ( 3 ) 2 were very roomy n comfortable 1 was way small. Parents campsite was clean and well maintained as was rest of the sites I seen. My only problem was the lady that vocally attacked us for walking across " her grass " she claimed they paid for site 39 and there site goes all the way to the road. He really focused on the our children till us Parents found out, she got a reality check quickly. My nieces n nephews had an absolute blast doing the color run ,playing volleyball and other games. I've alway heard about this place and seen the sign many many times but never been till this weekend. Thank you all for having us. Ill definitely be back to rent a cabin for a weekend.

My kid and I visited Spook Cave and had a beautiful time. There was only a short wait for the scenic boat tour through the cave, and it was well worth it. Our guide, Ren (I hope I’m spelling that right!), was full of energy, knowledge, and enthusiasm, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The tour was fun, informative, and a great adventure for both kids and adults. Highly recommend taking the tour if you're in the area!

Beautiful and very well kept up campground. All of the staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. Highly recommend to anyone! We went on the tour and Jared and Izzy were great tour guides! We were impressed with the staffs attention to detail and cleanliness! Our kids enjoyed the weekend as much as we did! We will definitely be back multiple times!
