Spray Lakes West Campground

Overview

Spray Lakes West Campground offers a rugged, immersive experience for those looking to escape the bustle of more developed tourist hubs. Located along the shores of the **Spray Lakes Reservoir**, this park is defined by its dramatic mountain backdrops and high-altitude atmosphere. As a rustic destination within Kananaskis Country, it provides an authentic connection to the Canadian Rockies, where the focus remains entirely on the natural landscape rather than modern luxuries. This is a place for travelers who appreciate **quiet evenings** and the sound of the wind through the pines.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 16 kilometers south of Canmore via the **Smith-Dorrien Trail**, the campground sits at an elevation that keeps the air crisp and the views clear. The drive itself is an adventure, taking travelers along a gravel mountain road surrounded by dense forests and jagged peaks. The park’s proximity to the water makes it a prime spot for viewing the shifting colors of the lake under the shadows of **Mount Sparrowhawk**. Visitors should be prepared for a remote setting where cell service is limited and nature takes center stage.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional dry-camping facility designed for self-sufficient travelers. You will find **unserviced sites** that offer a sense of privacy among the trees. Each site is equipped with a fire pit and a picnic table, perfect for evening gatherings. Key features of the park include:

  • Access to **vault toilets** and hand pump water stations.
  • Spacious gravel pads that accommodate a variety of RV sizes.
  • Close proximity to a public **boat launch** for reservoir access.

RVers should arrive with full fresh water tanks and a plan for power, as the park emphasizes a low-impact, primitive camping style.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the reservoir, which is a haven for **lake trout fishing** and paddling. Boat launches are accessible nearby, allowing for easy days on the water. Travelers often spend their time enjoying the following:

  • Exploring the **Mount Shark trailhead** for world-class hiking and mountain biking.
  • Paddling the turquoise waters of the reservoir in a kayak or canoe.
  • Photography sessions capturing the **dramatic mountain reflections** at sunrise.

For those seeking more amenities, the town of Canmore is a short but scenic drive away, offering local dining and supplies.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for **off-grid enthusiasts** who value scenery and seclusion over resort-style amenities. It is a fantastic choice for anglers, hikers, and photographers who want to be positioned directly within the wilderness. While larger rigs can navigate the gravel access road, the park is most comfortable for those in **smaller campers or vans** who are prepared for a mountain-centered experience. If you are looking to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the rugged beauty of Alberta, this park fits your travel style perfectly.

Tree covered camp site with numerous spots to choose from . We chose spot 29th on July 25th 2025 and it rained whole night. Luckily, our tent beared it all. The drive from campsite to town of canmore next morning was so beautiful because of the rain. For 30$/ night definitely a good campsite. Enjoy! :)

Beautiful views, wish the sites were further apart for some privacy. Lovely lady attendant was helpful and friendly.

Great location. We did a weekday camp to avoid crowds, we got what we wanted. Just enough ppl to not bump into anyone. Really well taken care of facilities. Don’t get a site next to garbage cans. Campers slam the doors and not good for sleeping kids Site ground was hard so the tent pins/pegs weren’t strong enough to for the hard ground

This spot is so beautiful a bit of a drive up the mountain but so worth it! All first come first serve the area was very clean the bathrooms were spotless, sites are close together but with the trees in between you cant see anyone else. I would love to come back for a chance to check out all the hiking trails near by.

This was the best get away wilderness camping. The road to get there is curvy and bumpy but what are you expecting when going into the Wilderness so you ride slow and that allows me to saw a mama bear and her Cobb and take picture. I took site 53 the last one as I wanted privacy and I had my own little trail to get to the lake. I could see the Rv next to me through the trees but I never saw them. Decent size lots . Screen tent 12 x 12 plus a small tent 6 x6 and i could park 2 vehicles. The beauty of the mountain around is stunning . From the campground there is trails to get higher up and see even greater view, easy to access. Dry toilet only , no water. My only regret is to have not brought a heater. I stayed there 3 nights and the days are short , the sun comes up at 8am , it did rain at 3 pm every day and by 6 pm it is cooling off already. Bring gear for 4 seasons in 1 day haha! I will definitely return with a heater. The manager is welcoming and easy going. Price is 31$ per night. Cash or credit.
