Spring Lake Fish & Wildlife Area
Overview
Spring Lake Fish & Wildlife Area offers a serene escape into the heart of Illinois nature. Covering over 6,000 acres, this site is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and centers around two expansive lakes. RVers looking for a tranquil atmosphere will find a landscape defined by sandstone bluffs and dense hardwood timber. Unlike busy commercial resorts, this state park focuses on the authentic outdoor experience, making it a peaceful retreat for those who appreciate quiet evenings and the sounds of local wildlife under a clear sky.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Tazewell County near Pekin, IL, the park sits along the eastern side of the Illinois River. The geography is unique for the region, featuring high sandstone bluffs that provide a dramatic backdrop to the water. The surrounding area is largely agricultural and forested, providing a significant buffer from city noise. Because it is located along the Illinois River valley, the drive into the park is scenic, setting the stage for a secluded stay that feels much further from civilization than it actually is.
Amenities & Park Features
The North Lake campground is the primary destination for RVers, offering sites equipped with electric hookups and level gravel pads. While the park maintains a rustic feel, visitors have access to essential features including fire rings, picnic tables, and convenient boat ramps for easy water access. It is important to note that the facility utilizes pit toilets and does not offer a shower house or sewer hookups, making it an excellent choice for self-contained trailers and motorhomes looking to enjoy the natural lakeside environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them busy, as the park is widely renowned for exceptional bass fishing and waterfowl hunting. Several miles of hiking trails wind through the bluffs, offering birdwatchers a chance to see bald eagles and various migratory species. For a change of pace, the city of Pekin is just a short drive away, featuring Mineral Springs Park and diverse local dining. Additionally, the nearby Sand Ridge State Forest provides extensive trail systems for those looking to explore even more of the regional ecosystem.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for independent RVers who prefer rugged natural beauty over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for passionate anglers and hunters who want to stay close to the water and the woods. If you enjoy unplugged camping and a slower pace of life, the quiet nights and dark skies here will be a highlight of your trip. It is particularly well-suited for mid-sized rigs looking for a low-cost state park experience in a beautiful river-bluff setting.

The open lawn area was perfect for families and small gatherings. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their time.

The dumping of trash has gotten ridiculous. There is literally a couch someone drug down by the water by the first entrance coming from Pekin right after the bushes they hung beer cans from. Whats with the water pollution and why is the milkweed being mowed down? As part of our homeschooling, we released our Monarchs out there this year and walked around cleaning up garbage and fishing line. It's a worthwhile place that human garbage is ruining. The game warden we have met was really cool and great at answering questions about hunting areas. We love Banner but we don't love the trashing of it at all. If you bring it in, take it out.
