Sproat Lake Park

Overview

Located on the central spine of Vancouver Island, Sproat Lake Park is widely considered one of the premier freshwater destinations in British Columbia. Famous for its unusually warm and clear water, the park offers a scenic retreat for those traveling through the Alberni Valley. The park is split into two distinct campground areas, providing a sense of seclusion and a deep connection to the coastal rainforest environment. It serves as a perfect midpoint for travelers making their way to the rugged west coast of the island.

Location & Surroundings

This park is situated just a short drive west of Port Alberni, nestled against the foothills of the Beaufort Range. The surroundings are characterized by dense Douglas fir forests and the sprawling, multi-armed reach of the lake itself. Because it is sheltered from the heavy coastal winds, the lake maintains a tranquil microclimate that is far warmer than the ocean nearby. The lush greenery and mountainous backdrop provide a stunning visual contrast to the deep blue of the freshwater shorelines.

Amenities & Park Features

RVers at this park can enjoy a authentic camping experience with sites designed to highlight the natural landscape. While the park maintains a rustic feel, it provides several essential amenities for a comfortable stay:

  • Flush toilets and hot showers are available for guests during the peak season.
  • Two concrete boat launches provide easy access for motorized and non-motorized watercraft.
  • Spacious lakeside picnic areas and sandy beaches are located in the day-use sections.

A major highlight is the access to the K’ak’awin petroglyphs, prehistoric rock carvings that can be viewed from a lakeside trail near the water’s edge.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The area surrounding the lake is an outdoor enthusiast’s playground. A few minutes away is Cathedral Grove, where visitors can walk through a rare remnant of an ancient Douglas fir ecosystem. In Port Alberni, known as the Salmon Capital of the World, travelers can visit the Maritime Discovery Centre or hike to the unique Hole in the Wall. On the water, activities like water skiing, kayaking, and fishing for rainbow trout are daily highlights for most visitors.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for families and water sports enthusiasts who prefer a nature-centric environment over a commercial resort. It is a fantastic choice for RVers who enjoy dry camping and want a peaceful basecamp to explore the central and western regions of Vancouver Island. If you appreciate historic landmarks, direct access to premium swimming, and quiet evenings surrounded by ancient trees, this park will perfectly suit your travel style.

Nice campsites in the upper campground, some with more trees than others. We were rent camping on a very rainy night so drove through the campground to find a site that would suit our needs. Very quiet campground with a welcoming ranger patrolling in their truck. The petroglyphs (~5-10min walk from the parking lot) and lake areas are beautiful and impressive. The beach and picnic areas looked really nice although we didn't use them. Worth a stay - especially with the higher cost of campgrounds and hotels further west toward Ukee and Tofino.

A great place to spend time on the water. The designated swimming area is clearly marked and safely separated from boats and jet skis. Facilities include washrooms by the parking lot, picnic tables, and access to clean drinking water.

Just spent four days camping here in our 17ft travel trailer. Our site was at the upper campground so it was about a 1/2 a km hike to the lake and the showers. We enjoyed kayaking on the lake, but it would be great place if you had a boat. The upper campground campsites are larger and more private which we enjoyed. Only pit toilets at the upper campground. Overall a nice clean campground and beautiful lake with spectacular views.

Clean lake water and a very good lake for children to play. The parking lot is also wide. There are rock wool sculptures, so I hope you find them as well. The best place for swimming and paddling. It's about 2 hours and 40 minutes from Victoria, so it's a pity that I can't go often.
