Standing Stone

Overview

Standing Stone State Park is located on the Cumberland Plateau in Hilham, Tennessee. Named after a legendary eight-foot-tall rock that once stood nearby, this park spans nearly 1,000 acres of scenic forest land. It was developed during the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and much of that historic craftsmanship is still visible in the park's architecture today. It offers a peaceful, rustic escape for RVers who enjoy traditional state park settings and a deep connection to local history.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in the rugged terrain of north-central Tennessee, surrounded by the vast Standing Stone State Forest. This remote location in Hilham provides a dense canopy of hardwoods, rolling hills, and quiet valleys. The centerpiece of the park is the 69-acre Standing Stone Lake, which adds a serene waterfront element to the heavily timbered landscape. This creates a secluded atmosphere perfect for those looking to disconnect from city noise and immerse themselves in nature.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground offers 36 sites equipped with water and electric hookups, accommodating RVs up to 45 feet in length. Facilities are designed to provide comfort while maintaining a natural feel. Key features include:

  • Two bathhouses with hot showers and modern restrooms.
  • A central dump station for RV waste management.
  • A seasonal swimming pool and a large playground for families.

For recreation, visitors have access to several picnic shelters and rowboat or canoe rentals on the lake. The park is also famous for its marble yard, which preserves the local tradition of marble playing.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Hiking is a major draw here, with over eight miles of trails ranging from easy lake loops to more strenuous forest treks. Fishing enthusiasts can find bass, trout, and bluegill in the lake waters. Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can take a short drive to Dale Hollow Lake for larger-scale boating and trophy bass fishing. The surrounding state forest also offers additional opportunities for nature photography and birdwatching, as the area is teeming with local wildlife.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature lovers and history buffs who prefer a quiet, authentic environment over a high-traffic resort. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to introduce children to outdoor traditions like hiking and fishing. Because of the winding roads leading to the park and the historic layout of the campsites, it is best suited for mid-sized RV travelers who appreciate a slower pace of life and well-preserved natural beauty in a forested setting.

We had a nice stay in the cabins at standing Stone State Park. The park staff worker Anna in the office was very helpful and courteous. The only problem we had with the cabin is that it was missing some of the kitchen items. We had a great time and plan on coming back in the future.

The park is always great but the cabins need help. We stayed in #10 over the Labor Day weekend (Thursday 8/28- Monday 9/1) and those mattresses are horrible! The one on the bed was about 5 inches thick and on a board. The one on the pull out sofa was even thinner than that. My opinion is that the money that was put into the dishwasher (that was never used) could have bought blinds or even curtains for the kitchen windows that looked right in on both beds. We placed towels over the window for privacy. Our cabin had so many spiders and cob webs it was crazy! The comfort for the price doesn't seem to equal at all!!!!!! I thought they were rustic cabins, so no need for WiFi or the dishwasher. I understand that over time things will change and prices will increase. We use to pay about $70 a night and free pool passes for the weekend. Now it's $120 for Thursday and $165 for the weekend nights. $7 a pool pass pre day. What happened? We still had a great weekend with family and friends but are dog tired from no sleep.

Standing Stone State Park was great! We loved learning about the home of Davey Crockett and really enjoyed walking around the lake. The large bridge alone makes it worth visiting.

The lake is beautiful. It's a great place to get away for a few days. The cabins are nice, not too crowded and with easy access to a fire pit. The trail is decently challenging. Overall I recommend it for a quiet less crowded option.

We did a quick hike on part of the lake view trail. It was pretty steep in parts but was worth the view! Lots of pretty wildflowers. Would definitely have loved to hike the whole trail.
