Stanislaus/Baker
Overview
Baker Campground provides a classic High Sierra camping experience along the banks of the Middle Fork of the Stanislaus River. Located in the heart of the Stanislaus National Forest, this seasonal destination offers a serene escape for those looking to disconnect from the digital world. The park is defined by its towering pines and proximity to the water, making it a staple for traditional campers and smaller RV enthusiasts exploring the Sonora Pass corridor. It serves as a gateway to the rugged beauty of the Sierra Nevada.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near Dardanelle, CA, the campground is nestled at an elevation of approximately 6,200 feet. The landscape is dominated by dense forest cover and dramatic granite outcrops. The Middle Fork Stanislaus River flows directly adjacent to the site, providing a constant soundtrack of rushing water. Travelers arriving via Highway 108 will experience steep grades and winding turns, rewarding them with some of the most pristine alpine scenery in Northern California. The remote setting ensures dark skies and crisp mountain air.
Amenities & Park Features
As a Forest Service facility, Baker focuses on a rustic camping experience rather than luxury perks. The park features paved roads and spurs, with individual sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. While there are no hookups available, potable water and vault toilets are provided during the peak season. Many sites are positioned to provide easy river access, which is perfect for morning coffee by the water. It is important to note that cell service is virtually non-existent here, emphasizing a true off-grid stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors. Anglers often frequent the river for trout fishing, while hikers can explore the nearby Columns of the Giants, a unique geological formation of basalt columns. A short drive east leads to Kennedy Meadows, offering horseback riding and access to the Emigrant Wilderness. For those seeking panoramic views, the Donnell Vista point provides a breathtaking look at the Donnell Reservoir and the surrounding canyon walls, showcasing the region's volcanic and glacial history.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for adventurous RVers who prefer a boondocking style of travel in smaller rigs or camper vans. Because of the tight turns and limited site lengths, it is not recommended for large motorhomes or big rigs. It is a haven for nature photographers and anglers looking for direct water access and a quiet atmosphere. If your goal is to trade Wi-Fi for stargazing and proximity to world-class hiking, Baker Campground offers a perfect high-altitude retreat.

One of best campground i have been! Host Tom and Phyllis are very hospitable. Bathrooms are very clean. I love the layout of the campground, some incline when you go on a short lil hike around the area. Fishing is very accessible. You can also buy firewood from the host if needed.

We’ve stayed at Baker Campground a couple of times with my daughters and granddaughter. The camp sites were very serviceable, Porta potties were kept clean, loved the fact we could have a campfire, explored the river. Every chance we got and listened to it at night with delight. One of my favorite places to go
