State Forest/North Park

Overview

State Forest State Park offers over 71,000 acres of pristine Colorado wilderness just outside Walden. Recognized as the Moose Capital of Colorado, this park provides a dramatic backdrop of jagged peaks and expansive forests for visiting RVers. It is a premier destination for travelers who want to escape the more crowded national parks to find peace in the rugged Medicine Bow Range. The park offers a unique opportunity to witness the wild intersection of alpine tundra and dense forest ecosystems.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the high-altitude basin of North Park, the area is defined by the stunning Never Summer Mountains. The journey to the park often involves scenic drives through Cameron Pass, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valley. The terrain transitions from lush meadows to high-altitude lakes, providing a diverse and beautiful landscape. This remote location offers some of the darkest night skies in the state, making it a haven for stargazing and solitude far from urban light pollution.

Amenities & Park Features

RV camping is primarily focused around the North Michigan Reservoir and the Ranger Lakes areas. While the park maintains a rustic, natural vibe, several loops offer electric hookups to accommodate modern rigs and provide comfort during the cool mountain nights. Standard amenities include picnic tables and fire rings at each site. While the park utilizes vault toilets, there are central dump stations and potable water access points available seasonally for those staying in self-contained units.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the massive resident moose population, which is best explored through the Moose Visitor Center. Anglers can enjoy high-quality fishing in the park’s many reservoirs and Gold Medal streams. For those seeking motorized adventure, there are extensive OHV trails suitable for exploring the backcountry. Hikers can challenge themselves on trails leading to the jagged Crags or the serene Lake Agnes, one of the most photographed alpine lakes in the region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is a perfect fit for wildlife photographers and those who enjoy a true backcountry atmosphere with their RV. It is not a luxury resort, making it best for travelers who value natural beauty and outdoor recreation over high-end amenities. It is also an excellent choice for winter enthusiasts, as the park remains open for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, offering a quiet, snowy escape for adventurous year-round explorers.

We stayed in a yurt. In the mountains. It was a beautiful experience i think that everyone should give it a try.

We just spent two weeks at North Park Campground, and it was the most relaxing vacation I’ve had in years. Our sites were clean and ready when we arrived, and the staff struck the perfect balance—helpful without hovering. The recent improvements to reopen North Park really show, and they’ll keep us coming back. The location is also ideal, with an easy drive to the Cheyenne Rodeo. The trails, while we wish there were more of them, offered stunning views and a true sense of escape—no trash, no careless riding, just pure outdoors. We also saw plenty of wildlife, including moose and mule deer, which made the rides unforgettable. Michigan Lake, now full again after the dam rebuild and freshly stocked by the park service, was another highlight. One note: Google Maps still needs to update the area map, so plan ahead when navigating. North Park has truly become a favorite, and we’re already looking forward to our next visit.

Campsites appear decent, hookups were fine. The sites are a generous size. If you want to do buddy sites I recommend 620 and 626. Trees aren't mature enough for much shade. Our dump hookup had to cross the paved ADA walkway from the campsite, so we left it unconnected until we needed to dump. Water tasted fine. The shower house was nicely done. The dumpster is at the entrance so it's a little walk or you can drop it on your way out. The old KOA buildings are still there in disrepair but some rustic cabins were still in use. No moose but we heard cows in the morning and wolves at night. There is some cell service at the campground. There are no rivers or lakes by the campground so if you see pictures by water they are not this campground. We would come back.

Cabin #1 was awesome.. it's meant for up to 20 people. Had lots of fun, but be prepared for the elements and lack of cell phone service.

Stay here for the location! The campground is fine, full hookups for my RV is all that really matters but my site was big, level, and everything worked as expected. The campground is centrally located for accessing all of the great things in the area including north MI res, American lakes, Cameron pass, all the good stuff. There's a little bit of road noise during the day but it's tolerable. I'll go back for sure. The views from my sight were amazing.
