Stemwinder Park

Overview

Stemwinder Provincial Park offers a tranquil, rustic camping experience along the banks of the Similkameen River in British Columbia. Located conveniently off Highway 3, this park serves as a scenic resting point for travelers exploring the Similkameen Valley. Unlike high-density commercial resorts, Stemwinder focuses on the natural landscape and the soothing sounds of the nearby river. It is a small, intimate park that provides a genuine connection to the rugged beauty of the BC interior without the distractions of modern urban life.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just west of the historic town of Hedley, the park is surrounded by the towering rock faces and pine forests characteristic of the region. The Similkameen River flows directly alongside the campground, providing a cool microclimate during the hot summer months. The location is ideal for those driving the Crowsnest Highway, offering a perfect balance between accessibility and a secluded wilderness feel. The surrounding valley is known for its dramatic cliffs and unique desert-like ecology that attracts both hikers and photographers.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features 28 vehicle-accessible campsites designed for a traditional outdoor experience. While there are no electrical or water hookups, the sites are well-spaced and shaded by mature trees. Key amenities include:

  • Vault toilets and standard pit facilities.
  • A hand pump for potable drinking water.
  • Spacious picnic tables and fire rings at each site.

Visitors should come prepared for dry camping, as there are no sani-dumps on-site. The park layout allows for easy river access, making it simple to find a spot for fishing or to enjoy the scenic waterfront views from your campsite.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is close at hand with the Mascot Gold Mine located in nearby Hedley, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich mining history. Anglers will appreciate the opportunities for river fishing, while nature enthusiasts can spot mountain goats on the nearby cliffs. A short drive away, the towns of Princeton and Keremeos provide local fruit stands, wineries, and additional hiking trails. Exploring the Bromley Rock area is another popular activity for those looking to enjoy more river-based recreation and swimming during the warmer months.

Who This Park Is Best For

It is a beautiful campground, only $18 on the spot or $24 if booked via the BC Parks website ahead. Lower spots are better since they're less noisy (from the highway) and closer to the river. Not every spot has access to the river. The bathrooms were super clean, rangers were very friendly.

Stayed two nights and had a wonderful stay. Reserved a site by the river, spacious level site with some shade from trees. Highway noise was tolerable, the sound of the river was nice. Park staff that came for check in were very friendly. Put toilets were clean and have hand sanitizer. Water from the water pump was very cool and refreshing. If using a tent make sure you have heavy duty tent pegs, the sites are hard packed. Would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful small Provincial site, a little tight driving loop in a larger rig if you have one. Reservations required, although some where available on a drop-in as reservations where posted at entrance. Boil water here, if you didn't bring any.

Nice park, sites are not over crowded. Sparse trees as per the nature of the area so not a lot of privacy or shade all the time. Pit toilets are clean, bright white and actually had toilet paper. They also have hefty doors and locks so no latches falling out of wood doors. Nice river front sites, and sites are staggered, so except for the sites closest to the road, you're likely to see the water. There's a path to the water but my knees can't make it. Staff lady was super nice and said people go swimming or just dip their feet in the river to cool off. It's a fast moving river so I wouldn't go far unless you're a strong swimmer, at least as of late June.

Provincial campsite with 25 sites along the Similkameen River and Number 3 Hwy in BC. Beautiful location and easy access to the river which we took advantage of on the hot summer days we were there. Since there are only 25 sites, camper noise was limited which was nice. Road noise was noticeable but didn’t bother us too much. Only pit toilets and you need to pump your own water.
