It has some pretty views. We didn’t spend a lot of time on their trails, as it was blazing hot. Would like to return when it’s cooler.

Would have received 5 stars, however camp host did not accept debit cards on site walk in. Would not accept instant guaranteed money on an unreserved site for an additional two nights. Camp host said only two nights allowed on walk in even though nobody reserved the site for the following two nights, that you would have to move to another site there for the other two nights again as a walk-in, a lot of work for an older disabled gentleman to set up and take down twice at same campground for another two nights for a total of four nights!

Very nice campground. Site 83 is at the end of the road, spacious, private, and overlooks the lake on two sides.

I hiked around the Boston pond, close to the entrance of the State park and it was well worth the visit.

Ignore Google Maps directions if heading i57 southbound & take the “Salem exit” instead of the one directly north of Salem that exits into Centralia, IL. We didn’t know & it was quite a bumpy ride… dislodged a lot of supplies & had to clean up. There was one narrow road along the drive which would be super tight for 2 RVs going opposite ways while heading East off of i57. Also, we didn’t see any state park directional signs between i57 and the Forbes SP entrance sign during the approx 25 min drive & had to guess right or left at a T-intersection when Google maps told us to continue straight & drive through a field. We left Forbes SP the next morning on a diff route traveling through Salem back to i57 & had no issues. We were walk-ins during off season in Feb (no h2o nor bathhouse access) & arrived after the office had closed, but were able to pay at 7am the next morning. Floating bridge linking campground to concessions/marina area is partially dismantled & undergoing extensive repairs after mangled from flooding (bit of a detour-walk to get from campground to marina with Concessions/restaurant not open bc off season, but tiny grocery store outside of state park open & selling bundles of firewood for $7). We were told dump & fill stations are open year round. Park office has small but interesting educational area inside & brochures for a lot of diff IL state parks. Very friendly staff! Tiny grocery store outside of state park, but normal size grocery about 15min away in Salem. Definitely coming back for a long weekend to hike the trails.

Nice out of the way state park. It is a beautiful park with a really nice lake. We rested up in the Circle Drive picnic area. It has several picnic tables, trash cans, restroom-I didn't use it so I can't review it-lots of parking and a great playground.

Tent Camping is great. Totally separate from the "electric" camping area's so it is very quiet. Sites are spread out over a nice wooded area and are very spacious. If you like quiet and the feeling of truly being "out in the woods" this is the campground for you! Forbes lake is very beautiful and is great for blue gill and small mouth bass and Crappie.
