Dana Peak Park is a scenic Corps of Engineers (COE) destination nestled on the northern shore of Stillhouse Hollow Lake. Known for its clear blue water and rugged limestone cliffs, this park offers a serene escape for those looking to immerse themselves in the Central Texas landscape. Visitors enjoy a mix of water-based recreation and well-maintained camping facilities that provide a peaceful, natural alternative to busier urban parks.

Location & Surroundings

Located in Harker Heights, Texas, the park is conveniently positioned between the cities of Killeen and Belton. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills and rocky shorelines, typical of the Texas Hill Country transition zone. The centerpiece is the 6,430-acre lake, which remains relatively uncrowded, offering stunning sunset views and a quiet environment well-removed from major highway noise.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features sites equipped with water and electric hookups, making it suitable for both RVers and tent campers. Guests have access to a four-lane boat ramp, a dedicated swimming beach, and multiple picnic pavilions for day-use activities. For those who enjoy active pursuits, the park boasts an extensive network of trails, including the popular Dana Peak Trail, which is shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the nearby Chalk Ridge Falls Park for scenic waterfalls and boardwalks. Fishing is a major draw here, with the lake being well-stocked with largemouth bass and catfish. If you need a break from nature, the nearby city of Harker Heights offers a variety of dining and shopping options, while the 1st Cavalry Division Museum in Fort Cavazos provides a deep dive into local military history.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize natural beauty and lake access over resort-style luxuries. It’s a great place to take photos if you are into photography. Also, perfect for recreational droning. Sadly, the park was closed (until further notice) when I went there on October 15 but boat launch was open.

The picnic area was closed due to the time of year but we still got to enjoy the rest of the lake are by the boat launch. Love this place

Buying a home 5 minutes away. You know where you’ll find me every weekend. We love it! We went hiking. Then we went and cooled off in the water. It wasn’t crowded. Considering it was Memorial weekend. Next time we go. We will learn a different hiking trail.

We enjoyed a 70-minute hike over trails that were easy to follow. My only regret is not having more time to spend there. Military, including veterans, can access the park for free. First, get yourself a free America the Beautiful card.

Love to go out there to sit and watch the lake and the fish in the birds and see the deer and have lunch. We also go out a lot of times and fish from the shore and it's just a great experience. Highly suggested for anyone who comes to the Harker hikes area to see and even do pictures.
