Stillwater

Overview

Stillwater State Park serves as a serene gateway to the expansive 26,000-acre Groton State Forest in central Vermont. Situated on the western shores of Lake Groton, this park offers a quintessential New England camping experience for those seeking natural beauty. It provides a peaceful retreat for travelers who prefer a scenic lakefront setting over a busy commercial resort. The park is managed by Vermont State Parks and is highly regarded for its well-maintained sites and seamless access to diverse recreational activities throughout the forest.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the town of Groton, the park is nestled in one of the most rugged and beautiful sections of the state. The surrounding Groton State Forest features granite peaks, dozens of ponds, and dense forests that create a deep sense of seclusion. Travelers will find themselves immersed in a landscape dominated by the multi-use trail system, which connects various state parks and natural landmarks. The park itself sits directly on the water, offering immediate views of the lake and easy access to the shoreline.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides 65 sites, including several specifically suited for trailers and RVs. It is important to note that this is a primitive camping experience, as there are no utility hookups available at individual sites. However, the park offers a sanitary dump station and potable water for RVers. Facilities include clean restrooms with flush toilets and coin-operated hot showers. Guests also have access to a sandy swimming beach, a boat launch for non-motorized or low-horsepower vessels, and a firewood and ice sales station.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore miles of trails, including the popular hike to Owl’s Head Overlook, which provides panoramic views of the forest and surrounding lakes. For those who enjoy the water, Lake Groton is perfect for fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Nearby Boulder Beach State Park offers additional swimming opportunities, while the Montpelier and Wells River Rail Trail is ideal for cycling and long walks through the wilderness. The Marshfield Reservoir is also just a short drive away for additional boating options.

Who This Park Is Best For

Stillwater is an ideal destination for nature lovers and dry campers who prioritize solitude and outdoor recreation. Because it lacks electrical hookups, it is best suited for RVers with self-contained rigs or those comfortable with a rustic lifestyle. It is a fantastic choice for families and paddlers looking to spend their days on the water or exploring the deep woods of Vermont in a quiet, unplugged environment away from the distractions of city life.

We stayed in the "maple" lean-to which was nice and private with a brook adjacent. Private beach lake access was gorgeous and clean. Staff was very helpful and kind. It wasn't a problem for us but just a heads up to plan accordingly, there is no WiFi or cell service in these woods. Bathrooms cleaned frequently and a coin operated shower. Can't wait to return!

Beautiful waterfront campsite. One of our favorite Vermont State Parks.

Our family has been going here for years and we love it! Great campground! Staff is wonderful, bathrooms are clean and very accessible, pet friendly and so much to do especially when they have their specials at the pavilion. We will continue to go every year! ❤️

I'm going with a 4 star. My only real complaint is the sandy camp sites. Normally, when we stay, the sand is manageable. This week with all the rain, not so much. It is off grid camping, which we don't mind we do it every year. Camper batteries tend to have an issue by the end of the week, with only having 2 two hour blocks of run time on the generator. All in all not a bad camping area.

Great state park with tons of hiking, motor and paddle boating, fishing and biking. There are some great tasks and it's very family friendly.
