Strathcona/Ralph River
Overview
Ralph River Campground, located within the southern end of Strathcona Provincial Park near Campbell River, offers a profound immersion into the British Columbia wilderness. It is one of the premier spots for travelers seeking a serene escape from modern life and the noise of more developed coastal sites. Surrounded by towering old-growth trees and the dramatic peaks of Vancouver Island, this park provides a rugged yet rewarding experience for self-sufficient RVers looking to connect deeply with the natural world. The atmosphere here is quiet and meditative, providing a perfect backdrop for those wanting to unplug and recharge under a dense forest canopy.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 25 kilometers south of Buttle Lake along a scenic gravel access road, the park is nestled in the heart of Strathcona Provincial Park. The surroundings are defined by a lush, ancient forest of Douglas fir and western hemlock, with the Ralph River winding nearby. This location is significantly more secluded than many other provincial parks, offering a cool, shaded environment even during the heat of the summer months. The drive to the campground along the shores of the lake provides breathtaking mountain vistas that set the stage for a true backcountry adventure.
Amenities & Park Features
As a provincial park site, the focus here is on natural beauty rather than modern convenience. There are no hookups or cell service, making it a true off-grid destination for the prepared traveler. The campground features 75 well-spaced, forested sites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. Practical amenities are limited to pit toilets and hand-pump water, so RVers should arrive with full fresh water tanks and sufficient power to be fully self-contained. The sites are widely known for their exceptional privacy, separated by thick natural undergrowth that creates a personal sanctuary for every visitor.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and hikers of all skill levels. A short drive or moderate hike away, you will find the stunning Lower Myra Falls, a multi-tiered waterfall cascading into the turquoise waters of Buttle Lake. Hiking is the primary draw, with access to various trailheads ranging from easy nature walks to challenging alpine ascents into the mountains. The nearby lake provides ample opportunities for paddling and fishing, while the lack of light pollution makes it an exceptional spot for stargazing once the sun dips behind the jagged peaks.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for those who prioritize wilderness access and solitude over resort-style luxuries. It is best suited for owners of small to mid-sized RVs, truck campers, or campervans who are comfortable with dry camping and navigating well-maintained gravel roads. This is a place for outdoor adventurers, nature photographers, and families who want to experience the raw beauty of the Pacific Northwest without the distraction of digital screens or crowded facilities.

Beautiful campsite but there is only 1 very rocky beach where some people might swim. It was usually windy and water was too cold in July. No grassy area or kids playground available. Not a great place for toddlers. Walk to any “beach” was 10 minutes or more and most were swampy shorelines. Myra Falls was a nice drive and hike. Campground was clean.

As I entered the outhouse for the first time, it seemed to be in an acceptable condition. As I raised the lid, I was mildly disturbed to see a couple flies, and then hundreds of flies burst forth like demons from hells, swirling in a tornado. I struggled to describe the feeling in my stomach as the tornado swirled around me and I mustered the strength to sit in the throne of flies. Eventually my primal needs overcome the horror and disgust. As the deed was in the doing even more flies broiled and buzzed beneath me. Very beautiful place myra falls was amazing.

Ralph river campground was great. I was impressed that hand sanitizer was stocked and the toilets were quite clean. The campground was nice and the other people at the other campsites were welcoming and open to making friends!

We camped there this past Labour Day weekend. First time thereĵ.. it is a rustic campsite, lots of old growth trees and sites are spread out and more private. The sound of the river flowing is really nice. There is a couple of beautiful short trails to Buttle Lake. The lake is so beautiful and lots of shallow area to swim. The river water is super cold but the jlake is warmer. No cell reception and no street lights at night so it's a fabulous place for star gazing. Outhouse/pit toilets only and they are 'meh' condition, lots of flies and a bit nasty looking. The park rangers do come regularly but the sanitizer dispenser was broken the entire time we were there. Also, there is no general store to get woods and ice. The park rangers sell woods but it's a hit and miss to find them. They do not sell ice, so come prepared. Luckily we didn't have mice problem and the wasps problem was not that bad..

Very beautiful campground, well maintained, no cell service, bathrooms cleaned every morning - however about 20 flies would come out of the toilet and wasps get stuck in there do it was a little stressful to go-to the bathroom. Sites were a little dusty but no big deal. The main issue was the mice got into our car overnight and ate into all of our dry goods so HIGHLY recommend sealed snappable containers for all food even if it's in the car. Beach was beautiful and trails by the bridge were taken care of (except one large tree that you have to climb over). We did have to leave a day early because of the forest fire slightly north of us and all of our stuff got covered in ash, but otherwise we would have stayed the 3 nights and been really content.
