Summit Lake

Overview

Summit Lake State Park offers a peaceful retreat centered around its namesake 800-acre lake in Henry County. Established in 1988, this destination has become a favorite for those who appreciate expansive water views and well-preserved natural habitats. The park covers over 2,680 total acres, providing a spacious environment where RV travelers can reconnect with the outdoors while enjoying essential modern comforts and quiet nights under the Indiana stars.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just northeast of New Castle, Indiana, the park is characterized by its diverse wetlands and rolling meadows. The location is uniquely positioned to attract a wide variety of migratory birds, including rare species like the black tern and sandhill crane, making the surroundings a vibrant hub for wildlife enthusiasts. Its proximity to major highways makes it an accessible weekend escape for residents of Indianapolis, yet it remains secluded enough to feel worlds away from the city bustle.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 120 Class A electric sites that accommodate a range of RV sizes. Guests have access to modern amenities, including clean comfort stations with showers, a convenient dump station, and seasonal boat rentals for exploring the water. The park also boasts a large swimming beach and multiple picnic shelters, ensuring that groups and families have plenty of space to relax together near the water's edge throughout the warmer months.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is a primary draw here, with the lake being well-stocked with walleye, crappie, and large-mouth bass. On land, visitors can explore several miles of multi-use trails that wind through woods and prairies, perfect for hiking or nature walks. For a change of pace, the nearby Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame provides a cultural excursion in New Castle, while the Wilbur Wright Birthplace and Museum offers a unique glimpse into aviation history just a short drive away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for avid birdwatchers and nature photographers who will appreciate the rare species found in the park's protected marshes. It is also perfectly suited for family campers looking for a safe, activity-rich environment with plenty of water-based recreation and educational nature programs. If you prefer the quiet serenity of a state park over the high-energy atmosphere of a private resort, Summit Lake is an excellent choice for your next Indiana road trip.

It is a great place to visit. I can't wait until next summer so I can try to fish it, because it looks like a great place to fish.

Only 4 stars because Indiana needs to support and better staff the parks. Great Lake with camping options. Perch and walleye are a great addition to the lake. The staff was super helpful with any questions.

Well, this park was never on radar! I'm so pleased to have discovered it! If you love just basic camping and a laid-back atmosphere with a few QUALITY amenities then here you go! The park officials are way and beyond with a very common sense(y)approach! Great friendly area! Had dinner and brunch at the local eateries, swam at the quaint, well maintained beach, fished off of several boat docks, and the lake! OMG, it is so clean and well maintained! We can see the wildlife like an aquarium! Quiet time at 10p.m. and everyone is respectful and complies! The cicadas song and moonlit stroll becomes magical! Simple, friendly, clean with great people in a very hospitable, great small town! So pretty and quaint!❤️

A great state park for fishing and hiking. Beautiful lake with various spots to view the lake. Deer and bald eagles can be seen particularly on the northside of the lake. Campgrounds have electric and share water. No sewer connections so don't ket the water connection fill that grey tank. I would still fill freshwater tank on site and manage grey tank as usual unless you are just staying for a few days. Enjoy!
