Sumter/Woods Ferry Rec Area

Overview

Woods Ferry Recreation Area offers a tranquil retreat tucked within the Enoree District of the Sumter National Forest. This site serves as a peaceful escape for those looking to reconnect with nature along the banks of the Broad River. Unlike modern resorts, this park emphasizes a primitive camping experience that prioritizes quietude and scenic beauty over digital connectivity. It is a place where the sounds of the forest replace the hum of highway traffic.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in rural Chester, South Carolina, the park is defined by its proximity to the Broad River, which winds through dense woodlands and rolling hills. The surrounding landscape consists of mixed hardwood forests and pine stands, creating a lush canopy that provides ample shade for campers. Travelers will find themselves immersed in a remote wilderness setting that feels worlds away from urban sprawl, offering a true backcountry atmosphere for those who appreciate solitude.

Amenities & Park Features

As a United States Forest Service site, the amenities are designed to be functional and low-impact. Visitors have access to vault toilets and potable water, though individual sites lack electric, water, or sewer hookups. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings under the stars. The park also features a boat ramp, providing easy access for those wishing to explore the river by kayak or canoe.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the direct access to the Woods Ferry Horse Trail, a multi-use path popular for both hiking and equestrian use. The Broad River is a primary draw for visitors, offering excellent opportunities for fishing and paddling through the calm waters. For a change of pace, the nearby town of Chester provides a glimpse into South Carolina history, while the Landsford Canal State Park is a short drive away for further exploration.

Who This Park Is Best For

This recreation area is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy boondocking and possess a spirit of adventure. It caters to travelers seeking a rustic forest environment rather than those looking for luxury resort amenities. Best horse trails within 100 miles! Lovely primitive campground, one of my all time favorite places to horse camp!

We love this place. Just a peaceful place that we can get away to without being too far away. Also has a beautiful 100 yard rifle range.

A true gem for the horseback rider, hiker, and fisherman. I'm a horse rider, so this is primarily geared towards them. Trails are exquisitely beautiful with lots of single track and slight elevation changes. Nothing dramatic just winding around hills. They are extremely well marked with lots of interconnectivity. Equine living quarters parking is excellent. Metal pipe corrals are well maintained. The local Woods Ferry Horse Club is doing a phenomenal job keeping trails cleared and color coded. Small informational plaques/trail signs are quite detailed. Well worth the trip!

We really enjoyed camping here! The sites are pretty secluded, and the walk to the river is really nice. Note: if the sounds of rifles being fired in the early morning bothers you, this may not be the place for you, as there is a rifle range not far from the campground. It didn't bother us, though...we are just bringing our guns next time!

We stayed here from July 1-11 with our Lance truck camper at site #6. From the 1-7 we had a great experience and enjoyed the quiet and beautiful campground. There are nature trails (horse riding trails), flowers and plants, a variety of birds and lots of squirrels. The vault toilets were clean and really no unpleasant smell. There are water pumps with fresh water available throughout the campground. Most sites are level and have a fire pit, table and horse corral. However on the evening of the 8th the quiet was interrupted when Equestrian campers arrived with their rigs and generators which they ran none stop even when they were out on the trails riding. They ran them all night long as well. While the first two had quieter generators, the individual that arrived on the 10th had a construction generator which he placed facing us and ran it constantly. No sleeping at all for us. He also took over the water pump which meant we and others had to walk up by the bathroom to get our water. We have been traveling full time and staying at campgrounds (even at other equestrian campgrounds) 2 &1/2 years and have always had courteous and respectful neighbors. This was the first time we experience someone who disregarded the quiet hours and disrespected others. (Even our overnight stays at Walmart was better). Just a heads up for campers who wish to enjoy nature and get a restful nights sleep, be warned and avoid this campground. Unless you don’t mind generator noise.
