Sunset Bay
Overview
Sunset Bay State Park offers a quintessential Oregon Coast experience nestled within towering sea cliffs and lush coastal forests. This park is famous for its protected sandy beach, which provides much calmer waters than most other spots along the rugged coastline. Visitors find a peaceful, serene atmosphere where the forest meets the ocean, making it a premier destination for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
Location & Surroundings
Located just twelve miles west of the Coos Bay and North Bend metropolitan area, the park sits along the Cape Arago Highway. It is the northern gateway to a magnificent trio of state parks connected by a scenic hiking trail system. The surrounding landscape features dramatic sandstone cliffs and dense stands of spruce and hemlock, offering a secluded feel while remaining within a short drive of local seafood markets and harbor services.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground is well-equipped for modern travelers, offering dozens of full-hookup RV sites that include water, sewer, and electricity. On-site facilities are well-maintained and include flush toilets, hot showers, and a seasonal dump station. For those traveling with groups or looking for a different experience, the park also features cozy yurts and traditional tent sites. Each RV space is designed to provide a rustic feel without sacrificing essential comforts.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the scenic hiking trails that wind along the cliffs to Shore Acres State Park, known for its formal botanical gardens and holiday light displays. Continuing south, the trail leads to Cape Arago for prime whale watching and seal sightings. Within the bay itself, visitors enjoy beachcombing, kayaking, and fishing. The sunset views from the beach are legendary, often painting the sky in vibrant shades of orange and purple.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for nature-loving families and outdoor adventurers who prioritize direct access to trails and water over high-end resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for RVers who enjoy a quiet, forest-enclosed camping environment. Because the bay is uniquely sheltered from the wind and large swells, it is also a top choice for travelers with young children who want a safer place to play in the sand and surf.

A little crowded with very little space between campsites, but the landscaping in between the sites provided visual separation and privacy. The park is well maintained and the hosts do a fantastic job keeping it that way. The blowers, mowers and edgers were whisper quiet. The reception was stellar and bathrooms were so very clean. The showers are cleaned every day and if you get there when they first unlock them you’ll get a freshly mopped and cleaned shower stall. Water was hot and plentiful. Thank you Oregon State Parks for making my long journey to get there worth it. I want to return again.

We stayed in a yurt. It was clean has a little table, ours was close to the bathrooms and showers. The little heater kept us nice and toasty warm at night. We will definitely come back.

Superb coastal location for the beach, hiking and seal watching. One of the most beautiful stretches of coast I have ever visited. Campground is well kept, clean and tidy with great facilities.

We camped for a few nights. Tent spots were good, plenty of space for families to set up. Trail to the beach was nice and not to long. It was a kid friendly park.

I have a great time I thought the Beach Cove was so cute and I found so many shells that work I'm beautiful lavender purple and volcanic rock and pumice that was purple. The tide was out so they were tide pools with crabs and anemones rocks to climb and what is that sound sphere doing up there perched on the top of that Cliff you guys see that? That's amazing how did that get there? And the geography is beautiful with so many different layers in the cliffs. Good parking and restrooms I just wish they had an explanation of how that darn Sans fear got there LOL oh and there's yarrow, elderberries, huckleberries and salal berries I couldn't believe it
