Superior/Devil Track Lake
Overview
Devil Track Lake Campground offers a quintessential North Shore experience within the vast Superior National Forest. Unlike the busier resorts found directly on the Lake Superior shoreline, this park provides a quiet, secluded atmosphere where the sound of wind through the pines takes center stage. It serves as a peaceful gateway to the wilderness, offering a chance to disconnect from modern distractions while remaining close enough to Grand Marais for convenient supplies and dining.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 12 miles inland from the harbor town of Grand Marais, the park sits on the northern shore of Devil Track Lake. The landscape is defined by dense forests of birch, balsam, and pine, creating a sense of deep-woods isolation. The elevation here is higher than the Lake Superior shoreline, often resulting in cooler temperatures and a distinct atmosphere that mirrors the rugged Gunflint Trail wilderness area just to the north.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic facility designed for those who enjoy traditional camping and self-sufficient RVing. While you will not find electric or sewer hookups, the park features spacious campsites that offer excellent privacy between neighbors compared to private resorts. Basic essentials provided include vault toilets and a solar-powered water system. For those bringing watercraft, the concrete boat ramp and accessible fishing pier provide easy entry to the water, making it a favorite for active lake users.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the water, where anglers find consistent success fishing for walleye and northern pike. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the artisan shops and galleries of Grand Marais or hike the Pincushion Mountain trails for panoramic views of Lake Superior. The nearby Gunflint Trail offers endless opportunities for wildlife viewing, including frequent moose sightings, and provides access to several entry points for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for RVers who prefer a primitive camping style and value natural solitude over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for outdoor enthusiasts looking to fish and boat, as well as solo travelers seeking a quiet basecamp for North Shore adventures. If your travel style favors large, private lots and the rustling of leaves over high-speed internet and paved pads, this forest retreat will suit you perfectly.

Great fishing and beautiful scenery!

We have gone camping at D.T. lake for 2 yrs in a row. The campsites are far apart so you feel a nice sense of being on the woods. Just a few miles down the road back towards the main road to town is a great dinner site at a lodge. They typically have an all-you-can-eat fish fry with Cole slaw and fries. It's a nice way to enjoy the evening if you decide not to cook out over the open fire. Most camp sites were on the lake.

We arrived on Monday and all the lake side sites had valid tags on them but the people and campers didn't show up for many hours. If these sites are not reservable than what did we see?

Amazingly beautiful. We kayaked for 3 hours. Great places off shore to swim. Clear and cool!
