Superior/Fenske Lake
Overview
Fenske Lake Campground offers a quintessential Northwoods experience tucked within the vast Superior National Forest. Located just off the scenic Echo Trail, this small, rustic campground provides a peaceful escape from the modern world. Surrounded by towering white pines and ancient birch trees, visitors can enjoy a serene environment where the haunting calls of loons frequently echo across the water. It is a perfect destination for those seeking a wilderness-focused camping trip that emphasizes natural beauty and quietude over commercial bustle.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated approximately 10 miles north of Ely, Minnesota, serving as a tranquil gateway to the famous Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The local landscape is characterized by the rugged rock outcroppings and dense boreal forest typical of the Minnesota Iron Range. Fenske Lake itself is a relatively small, clear body of water that remains sheltered from heavy winds, making it an ideal setting for morning paddles and observing local wildlife such as bald eagles, ospreys, and the occasional moose.
Amenities & Park Features
As a United States Forest Service facility, the amenities at this location favor the self-sufficient RVer. The campground features wooded back-in campsites equipped with heavy-duty fire rings and picnic tables. While there are no electric or water hookups, guests have access to vault toilets and a solar-powered water pump for drinking water. The facility also includes a well-maintained boat launch and a dedicated fishing pier, providing excellent access for those looking to catch northern pike, walleye, or panfish in the calm waters.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Exploring the surrounding area is a primary draw for many visitors. The nearby International Wolf Center and the North American Bear Center in Ely provide world-class educational experiences just a short drive away. For hikers, the Dead Man's Ridge Trail is accessible near the campground, offering stunning views of the surrounding forest canopy and hidden glacial lakes. Many travelers use Fenske Lake as a convenient basecamp for day-trip paddling excursions into the protected Boundary Waters wilderness area.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is best suited for adventurous RVers who prefer a primitive, natural setting over resort-style luxury. Because the sites are designed to preserve the forest canopy and lack hookups, it is an ideal fit for camper vans, truck campers, or small-to-medium travel trailers. Travelers looking for a quiet retreat to reconnect with nature will find Fenske Lake to be an exceptional choice, particularly those who enjoy fishing, canoeing, and the solitude of the northern woods.

An absolute beautiful place, wonderful cabins, and the lake is very peaceful and scenic. The cabin we had was clean, well equipped with the basics, and the boat performed well for our ffishing adventure's. The staff was kind, and helpful for anything we needed.

Good bunkhouse with decent beds. A fireplace outside would have been nice. Paid with cash and still got charged the credit card price so beware they will atomically charge you the extra fee for a credit card.

The cabin was great!! If was perfect for our pre wedding week looking right at our wedding site. We enjoyed the sauna a few times which was awesome!! We portaged to the Sletten lakes and enjoyed a great lunch on a wonderful rock outcropping. Our hosts were very courteous. We can't wait to return. ❤️FenskeLake

We have been coming to Fenske Resorts for the past 6 years and love this place. Chris & Laurie are fantastic. Absolutely beautiful area. You can do as much or as little as you like in terms of adventure. If you like to canoe and portage, it's worth the upgrade to the Kevlar canoe. The hiking is as simple or as rugged as you like. Visit Kawishiwa Falls and Gabbro Lake is a must.
