Superior/McDougal Lake
Overview
Located within the heart of the Superior National Forest, McDougal Lake Campground offers a tranquil escape for those looking to disconnect and recharge. This rustic destination provides a peaceful backdrop of dense pine and birch forests situated along the shores of a scenic 544-acre lake. It is a premier spot for travelers who value natural solitude and traditional camping experiences over modern resort frills. The atmosphere here is defined by the haunting calls of loons and the gentle rustle of the Northwoods breeze, creating a true wilderness vibe.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated about 10 miles west of Isabella, MN, tucked away from the busy tourist corridors of the North Shore. The surrounding terrain is characterized by the boreal forest landscape typical of northeastern Minnesota. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a pristine environment where the Stony River and numerous smaller glacial lakes crisscross the region. This secluded location ensures incredibly dark night skies perfect for stargazing and frequent sightings of local wildlife, including moose, deer, and bald eagles.
Amenities & Park Features
As a National Forest facility, the amenities focus on providing the essentials for a comfortable wilderness stay. The park offers spacious, shaded sites equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings. While there are no electric or water hookups available for RVs, guests have access to clean vault toilets and potable water provided via hand pumps. A key feature of the campground is the well-maintained boat ramp and a designated sandy swimming beach, which provides easy access to the water for cooling off on warm summer days.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this region. Fishing for walleye, northern pike, and panfish is a popular pastime on McDougal Lake, while the calm waters are ideal for quiet canoeing and kayaking. Hikers can explore the Stony River Grade, a nearby trail following an old railroad bed that offers miles of scenic walking and birdwatching. For those willing to take a short drive, the rugged cliffs and dramatic vistas of Tettegouche State Park and the North Shore are within reach for a day trip.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is an ideal match for boondocking enthusiasts and RVers who enjoy a back-to-basics approach to travel. It is best suited for smaller to mid-sized rigs that can easily navigate the gravel access roads and forested site pads. Travelers who prioritize wildlife photography, quiet reflection, and water-based activities will find this a perfect northern retreat. If your goal is to trade reliable cell service for a crackling campfire and a pristine lake view, this Isabella gem is the destination for you.

I was there cleaning up after the fire

Quiet, beautiful peaceful tranquility. There really isn't a beach, and it's sort of mucky. But a beautiful spot to camp.

Nice big sites. Plenty of room for tents or a midsized trailer/rv. Nice overlooks of Lake McDougal. Bathrooms (pit toilets) are clean. Well water has a solar pump, and tastes very clear. Access road in and out of campground is will maintained. Quiet and peaceful.
