Superior/Ninemile Lake

Overview

Ninemile Lake Campground offers a quintessential Northwoods experience tucked within the vast Superior National Forest. Located near Finland, Minnesota, this rustic destination provides a peaceful retreat for travelers seeking to disconnect from the modern world and embrace the serenity of nature. The park is characterized by its heavily wooded sites and immediate access to the calm waters of Ninemile Lake. It is a place where the haunting calls of loons and the gentle rustle of pine needles replace the hum of highway traffic, making it a hidden gem for those who value quiet solitude.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated approximately ten miles inland from the rugged North Shore of Lake Superior, offering a lush and secluded environment. Surrounded by a diverse forest canopy of birch, balsam, and towering pines, the setting feels private and untouched. The proximity to the Superior Hiking Trail makes this location a prime basecamp for trekkers and nature photographers alike. The landscape is beautifully rugged, offering a true sense of the Minnesota wilderness while remaining accessible via well-maintained forest roads that wind through the rolling terrain.

Amenities & Park Features

As a forest service site, the amenities focus on the essentials for a traditional, back-to-basics camping experience. Visitors will find vault toilets and a solar-powered water pump providing potable water during the peak season. Each spacious site is equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and a sturdy picnic table, perfect for evening meals under a canopy of stars. While there are no electric or sewer hookups, the park features a concrete boat ramp and a fishing pier, making it easy for visitors to launch watercraft and enjoy the lake's recreational opportunities.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with walleye and northern pike fishing topping the list of popular activities. The lake is also ideal for morning canoeing or kayaking when the water is glass-calm. A short drive from the campground takes you to Tettegouche State Park, famous for its dramatic cliffs and spectacular waterfalls along the Lake Superior shoreline. Additionally, the nearby town of Finland offers a glimpse into local Finnish heritage and serves as a convenient stop for basic supplies and local hospitality.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a primitive camping style and natural beauty over modern resort-style luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for anglers and paddlers who want to be just steps away from the water. Beautiful location. Many sites right next to the lake. The sites are a little close together, but seems semi private because of lots of trees. Has a short hiking trail across the gravel road. Boat access with a decent size parking lot.

This campground is a hidden gem. The lakeside sites are very large and quite private. Being right on the lake is fantastic for canoes and kayaks. Friendly host, clean facilities. Close to several state parks and a lot of lakes with east public canoe/kayak access. Very buggy (like much of the Northwoods in the summer months). Bring mosquito headnets and bug spray, and a screen tent if you plan to sit outside your tent much.

Used to go as a kid. Very nice campground. This place is what camping should be.

Great rustic campground that provided us a perfect base camp as we explored and fished all the surrounding lakes. Campsites are spread out nicely and the campground was very quiet, even with it being fairly full.
