Superior/Trails End

Overview

Located at the very terminus of the legendary Gunflint Trail, Superior/Trails End offers a truly remote escape into the heart of the North Woods. This destination serves as a prestigious gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), providing travelers with a rare opportunity to camp at the edge of one of America's most pristine and protected wilderness areas. The park is characterized by its quiet atmosphere, stunning natural beauty, and its position as the final outpost before the road yields to vast, interconnected waterways.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 57 miles north of the harbor town of Grand Marais, the park is nestled between the majestic Saganaga and Seagull Lakes. The surrounding landscape is a masterclass in boreal beauty, featuring dramatic granite outcroppings, towering white pines, and crystal-clear glacial waters. Because it is located at the literal end of the road, there is absolutely no through traffic, ensuring that the only sounds you hear are the haunting calls of loons and the rustle of the wind through the thick balsam firs and cedar trees.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides a rugged yet comfortable camping experience designed to complement its wild surroundings perfectly. Key features include spacious wooded sites that offer significant privacy and a genuine sense of solitude. Visitors can enjoy several functional features including:

  • Direct water access via a convenient on-site boat launch for lake exploration.
  • Clean and accessible vault toilets located strategically throughout the campground loops.
  • Solar-powered water pumps providing fresh potable water for campers.
  • Dedicated fire rings and picnic tables provided at every individual site for evening gatherings.

These facilities ensure that while you are deep in the Superior National Forest, your basic needs are met with efficiency and care.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is always within easy reach at the end of the Gunflint Trail. A short distance from the campground, the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center offers fascinating insights into the cultural and natural history of the area. Hikers can explore the nearby Magnetic Rock Trail, which is famous for its 60-foot magnetite monolith and unique geological features found nowhere else in the state. Of course, the primary draw remains the endless miles of waterways, perfect for world-class walleye, northern pike, and lake trout fishing in some of the cleanest water in the country.

Who This Park Is Best For

Superior/Trails End is the ideal choice for adventurous RVers who prefer deep natural immersion over the crowded amenities of a traditional resort. If your travel style involves kayaking, wildlife photography, or simply escaping the digital world for a few days, this is the perfect northern basecamp. It is particularly well-suited for self-contained rigs and travelers looking to experience the authentic, rugged spirit of the Minnesota wilderness while enjoying the stability of a designated campsite located exactly where the road ends and the true adventure begins.

The 57-mile Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway winds its way from Grand Marais north through Superior National Forest to Saganaga Lake, ON, and offers many pleasant surprises in route, especially in autumn. 🍁 "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." ~ Robert Frost

Take the road slower or at least cautiously as some of the turns are sharp and close together. Beautiful scenery all along the way.

Rather ordinary in my opinion. Lots of trees to look at and that's about it.
