Susitna Landing and Campground

Overview

Susitna Landing and Campground serves as a premier gateway for those looking to explore the rugged waters of the Susitna Valley. Known primarily for its robust river access, this facility caters to outdoor enthusiasts who value functionality and proximity to nature over resort-style luxuries. Whether you are arriving for a weekend of salmon fishing or using it as a base camp for Mat-Su Valley exploration, the park offers a rustic Alaskan experience where the focus remains on the surrounding landscape and the bounty of the rivers.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled at the confluence of the Susitna and Kashwitna Rivers in Willow, Alaska, the campground is surrounded by dense boreal forests and vast waterways. The location provides breathtaking views of the river systems that define the region's geography. Its position off the Parks Highway makes it a convenient roadside stop for travelers heading toward Denali or Fairbanks, yet it feels worlds away from the hustle of more developed areas. The sound of rushing water and the rustle of nearby birch trees create an authentic wilderness atmosphere.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is designed with a focus on utility for boaters and anglers. It features a massive four-lane boat launch that accommodates various vessel sizes, making it a hub for river activity. Campsites are generally level and accommodate RVs, offering a mix of back-in and pull-through spots. Essential facilities include:

  • Fish cleaning stations to handle the day's catch
  • Electric hookups available at select campsites
  • Potable water and vault toilets
  • Picnic tables and fire rings at each site

While hookups are limited compared to urban parks, the facility provides the necessary infrastructure for a comfortable stay amidst the Alaskan wild.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is undoubtedly the main draw, with opportunities to hook King and Silver salmon depending on the season. Beyond the riverbanks, visitors can explore the community of Willow, known as the restart location for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Hiking trails in the Hatcher Pass area are a short drive away, offering alpine scenery and historical mining sites. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep their binoculars ready, as moose, eagles, and bears are frequently spotted within the Matanuska-Susitna Borough’s expansive wilderness.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is an ideal fit for dedicated anglers and boaters who need direct access to the Susitna River. It is best suited for RVers who enjoy dry camping or have self-contained rigs and prefer a no-frills, nature-centric environment. If your travel style prioritizes early mornings on the water and evening campfires over swimming pools and clubhouse activities, this park will meet your needs. It serves as a perfect home base for those seeking a genuine, unpretentious Alaskan outdoor adventure.

One of the nicest park/boat launches I've seen in Alaska. Very clean, fish cleaning stations easily accessible.

Campground is nice. Water access is pretty limited. Nice boat launch though.

Quiet campground at the river. Big sites (we were on #21). Facilities simple but clean.

Ever since management have changed, No more store? No more public shower? No more city water? Had a great time staying last weekend. Very quiet, lots of room to roam around, can fish, kids can run around. Gas station isnt far from there but we came with our rv.
