Suwannee River

Overview

Suwannee River State Park offers a serene escape into the heart of North Florida’s wilderness. Located where the Withlacoochee and Suwannee rivers meet, this park provides a unique landscape shaped by flowing water and limestone bluffs. Visitors can explore the deep-rooted history of the region while enjoying the peaceful rustle of Spanish moss in the towering oak trees. It serves as a premier destination for those looking to experience the authentic, natural beauty of Florida away from the crowded coastal regions.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just west of Live Oak, Florida, the park is defined by its dramatic geological features and dense forest canopy. The limestone outcroppings along the riverbanks create a striking contrast against the dark, tea-colored waters of the Suwannee. The surrounding area is part of the Suwannee River Valley, characterized by rolling hills and ancient sinkholes. This location provides a tranquil backdrop for travelers who appreciate quiet mornings and the sights of native wildlife including white-tailed deer and various wading birds.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is well-equipped to handle modern RVs while maintaining a rustic atmosphere. The park features 30 full-facility campsites that accommodate various rig sizes. Standard features include:

  • Water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electrical hookups
  • A modern bathhouse with hot showers
  • A central dump station and picnic pavilions

For those looking to get on the water, the accessible boat ramp and canoe launch provide easy entry points for a day of paddling or fishing in the slow-moving currents.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities, from hiking the Sandhill Trail to exploring the remnants of Civil War earthworks overlooking the river. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park, a world-renowned site for cave diving. The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park is also nearby, hosting major festivals and events throughout the year. For a more relaxed experience, the park’s hiking trails offer views of balanced rocks and diverse ecosystems unique to this region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature photographers and paddlers who want to immerse themselves in Florida’s river culture. Because of its smaller size and quiet environment, it is best suited for RVers who prefer a peaceful retreat over high-energy resort amenities. History enthusiasts will particularly enjoy the interpretive sites, while avid birdwatchers will appreciate the variety of species found along the riverbanks. It is a perfect stop for travelers seeking a deep connection with the outdoors and local heritage.

Excellent well kept trail system with loops to prevent doubling back. Whole thing can be done in a couple hours and comes in under 6 miles. Highly recommend.

This was our 1st visit to this state park, but won't be our last. We did 3 trails (Lime Sink Run, Earthworks, and Sandhill Loop to Columbus Cemetery). Each trail was unique and pleasant, with plenty to see. There were quite a few deer on the Sandhill trail. A beautiful boardwalk on the Lime Sink Run trail. Earthworks trail had remnants of old steamboats. This park is one of my new favorites.

Beautiful place! The river is so clear. The trails are a little over grown but worth the hikes for the views!

This park is beautiful, a must see! Friendly staff! We were on the trail and there were deer in the brush right next to us and you can see the river from the trails and access to the river from the trails, there’s bridge with clear water underneath that you can walk through, there’s swings where you can view the river and picnic tables, a playground, really cool historical things to look at, it’s just so pretty!

Had a blast but they made my friend leave and tried to steal his electrical cord, then tried to extort him for 50 bucks to give it back. The park officer brought it back. The Mad Hatter is a very popular guy at the festival, so they really got a black eye. The park was great, I had no problems, but the few ruin it for many. So shame on the staff, you should refund Kevin 100% of his money. Until you do I will never come back.
