Swiftwater Park (Soldotna City Park)

Overview

Swiftwater Park is a premier municipal facility managed by the City of Soldotna, located directly along the banks of the world-renowned Kenai River. This park offers a quintessential Alaskan camping experience, combining the rugged beauty of the wilderness with the accessibility of a city-managed site. It is widely recognized as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts who want to immerse themselves in the local ecosystem without straying too far from town. The park is characterized by its peaceful, wooded setting and its reputation as a legendary destination for seasonal salmon runs.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just a short distance from the heart of Soldotna, the park provides a secluded atmosphere thanks to its dense canopy of mature spruce trees. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the glacial turquoise waters of the river, which flow rapidly past the campsites. While it is conveniently located near the Sterling Highway, the natural buffer of the forest helps maintain a sense of privacy and quiet. Visitors often find themselves sharing the space with local wildlife, as the area is a known habitat for bald eagles and moose wandering through the riparian zones.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is designed with a focus on functionality and conservation. It features over 40 campsites that cater to various RV lengths, though the vibe remains distinctly rustic. Key features include a well-maintained boat launch and extensive elevated boardwalks that allow for river access while protecting the sensitive shoreline from erosion. For the convenience of RV travelers, the park provides potable water and a dump station, along with clean restroom facilities. Multiple fish-cleaning stations are strategically placed along the water to accommodate the many anglers who visit during the summer months.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for most visitors is the exceptional shore-based salmon fishing, with dedicated platforms and stairs leading directly to the water. Beyond the park boundaries, the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge offers a vast network of hiking trails and photography opportunities just a few miles away. For a taste of local culture, guests can visit Soldotna Creek Park for community concerts or explore the various shops and local eateries in downtown Soldotna. The central location also makes it an ideal base for day trips to the Russian River or the coastal charms of Homer.

Who This Park Is Best For

Swiftwater Park is an ideal choice for serious anglers and nature photographers who want to be steps away from the water. It appeals most to travelers who prefer a scenic, natural environment over the paved rows of a high-end RV resort. Because the park offers a more traditional camping feel, it is perfect for those who enjoy the sound of the river and the shade of the forest. If you are looking for a community-oriented park that serves as a gateway to the best of the Kenai Peninsula, this destination will fit your travel style perfectly.

Nice not too crowded, privacy and number of options available to choose between to do onsite fishing. Nice fire pits in the individual sites to utilize

We absolutely loved staying at the swiftwater campground, they are large campgrounds and you pay at the front. It isn’t expensive and such a great location right up against the Kenai, it allowed us to fish day and even night if we wanted to. They have lots of ramps down to the water. It seemed pretty clean and it’s a very convenient location, they have restaurants and grocery stores just down the road which allows door dash if needed. We liked everything about it and caught lots of fish. If we come back to Alaska we will be staying and fishing here. They have have fillet tables on the ramps next to the water where you can clean and fillet the fish.

We didn't catch any fish, but that wasn't the campground's fault. Unfortunately we came on a day when the fish counts were just low. The site itself was nice and it was a tiny bit less crowded than Centennial Campground down the road. There's really nice river access including a boardwalk you can fish from if you can't/don't want to enter the water. Toilets were a little overused but that's kind of to be expected during this busy season. Campsites were decently spaced but you can hear the neighbors' music, dogs, and kids, so if you're looking for a super quiet nature retreat this may not be the place for you. Costs $26 per night.
