Swiss Valley Park (Dubuque County Park)
Overview
Swiss Valley Park offers a serene escape into the rolling hills of Dubuque County. This 62-acre park is a hidden gem for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature without straying too far from city conveniences. It is managed by Dubuque County Conservation and provides a peaceful, wooded setting for a weekend getaway or a quiet stopover. The park is well-regarded for its lush canopy and the gentle sounds of Catfish Creek winding through the valley floor, creating a calming soundtrack for your stay.
Location & Surroundings
Located just outside of Peosta and a short drive from the city of Dubuque, the park sits within the unique Driftless Area, characterized by its lack of glacial silt and presence of deep valleys. The surrounding landscape is defined by limestone bluffs and dense hardwood forests that come alive with vibrant color during the autumn months. It feels secluded and private, offering a distinct break from the highway noise often found at standard commercial campgrounds along major interstates.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features back-in sites equipped with electrical hookups, ranging from 20 to 50 amps to accommodate various RV sizes. While the sites maintain a rustic feel, visitors have access to essential modern comforts including a modern shower building and updated restroom facilities located conveniently near the camping loops. For those who enjoy outdoor recreation, the park offers access to well-maintained hiking trails and excellent trout fishing opportunities in the cool, spring-fed waters of the creek.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Directly across the road, the Swiss Valley Nature Center provides educational exhibits and miles of additional hiking trails through diverse habitats like prairies and woodlands. A fifteen-minute drive takes you into Dubuque, where you can visit the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium or take a ride on the historic Fenelon Place Elevator. Sports fans often make the trek to the nearby Field of Dreams Movie Site in Dyersville, which remains a popular day trip destination for families.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and families who prefer a quiet, scenic environment over a bustling resort atmosphere with loud entertainment. It is a fantastic choice for anglers looking to fly fish for trout or birdwatchers hoping to spot local species in the timber. Because the sites are tucked into the woods, it is best suited for those who appreciate a smaller, more intimate camping experience where the primary goal is to disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty of Iowa.

It's gorgeous! The park pavilion was really nice and the camping area's are especially nice. There's a nice stream that runs through there and we are going to take our precious 4 legged girls there for hikes.

To the Swiss Valley Park Organizers, I am writing to express my disappointment with the current state of the playground's Voice carrier stations. They are no longer functioning, which has been a great source of sadness for my children. As a member of the community who contributes tax dollars to the park, I find it disheartening that a key feature of the playground is not maintained. I hope this issue can be resolved promptly. Sincerely, Me

The park is great and our visit was fun. Even for the 4th of July it was quiet. Seen a variety of rigs from home built, 5vr’s to tents.

Just discovered this beautiful county park the other day when our family was looking for an in between place to meet up. My husband and I live 2 1/2 hours northeast and our daughter, SIL, and grandsons live 2 hours west of Swiss Valley Park. My dad’s side of the family are all in Switzerland. We have been there a few times to visit and love it so much! What a great name for a park with rolling hills, a lovely creek meandering through, large trees, a chorus of songbirds, and cows grazing on the hillside. If the cows had bells, I would have thought I was in Switzerland. We couldn’t stay long but definitely will come back to camp sometime soon.

Lovely little Campground. Some pros: Water and electrical hook up with a dump station. Fun playground. Love that the little creek runs over the road so it splashes up when you drive through it! It's a bit of a walk along a road to the nature center which chooses at 3:30 pm on weekdays☹️ We got there 3 minutes before they closed so turned around and walked back (a bit over a mile) without getting to see it. I've been told it's a really nice sized center with a live bee hive viewing window in the center! A few cons: Bathrooms are OK, a bit dirty. There is no easily identifiable signage stating what to do when you get there for a site. The "kiosk " is over by the shower/ bath room with the envelopes to pay.
