Tahoe/Chapman Creek
Overview
Tahoe/Chapman Creek Campground offers a serene escape into the heart of the Tahoe National Forest. This seasonal destination, situated near the historic gold-rush town of Sierra City, provides a classic mountain camping experience. Unlike modern resorts, this park emphasizes a primitive connection to nature, where the sounds of rushing water replace the hum of electronics. It serves as an ideal basecamp for those looking to explore the rugged beauty of the northern Sierra Nevada range while enjoying a quiet, forested atmosphere.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is uniquely positioned at the confluence of Chapman Creek and the North Fork Yuba River. Towering stands of pine, fir, and cedar provide ample shade and a sense of seclusion for each site. At an elevation of approximately 6,000 feet, the air remains crisp even in the heat of summer. The surrounding landscape is defined by dramatic granite peaks and lush alpine meadows, making the Gold Lake Highway corridor one of the most scenic drives in Northern California.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service site, the amenities here focus on the essentials for a comfortable stay. Visitors will find vault toilets and potable water available throughout the grounds. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring for evening campfires. While there are no hookups or dump stations on-site, the layouts can accommodate smaller RVs and trailers. It is important to arrive prepared with full tanks and battery power if you plan an extended stay in this rustic setting.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity in this region. The nearby Sierra Buttes Lookout offers a challenging hike with rewarding 360-degree views of the surrounding peaks. Fishing is a popular pastime along the banks of the Yuba River, while the nearby Lakes Basin Recreation Area provides dozens of alpine lakes for kayaking. For those interested in history, the town of Sierra City offers a glimpse into the region's mining past, and the Pacific Crest Trail passes through the area.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best suited for travelers who prefer boondocking and dry camping over luxury amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to unplug and anglers wanting easy access to mountain streams. Because of the winding mountain roads and site dimensions, it is most compatible with small to mid-sized RVs rather than large luxury coaches. If you value privacy, stargazing, and the smell of pine needles over modern conveniences, this forest retreat will perfectly fit your travel style.

Wonderful experience. Accessibility from I 70 was welcome! Spencer was super nice and accommodating. You can tell he would help anyone with anything. The park is well kept and has all the amenities one needs- dog park, laundry, clean bathrooms, homey little pavilion with a barbecue and firewood for the fire pit. Definitely would stay here again if in the area. Reasonable prices too.

Dirty haphazard and confusing camping zones. Old bathroom vault. Bugs. So many bugs.

Beautiful. The only issue was a lack of running water. Only one hand pump water faucet for the whole facility.

This is a quiet and friendly campground. The back connects to a hiking trail all the way up to Haskell Peak (a fun hike), there is a creek with trout for fishing, and the camp host is always fantastic!
