Tahoe/Prosser
Overview
Tahoe/Prosser offers a serene escape into the Tahoe National Forest just outside of Truckee, California. Situated near the banks of the Prosser Creek Reservoir, this US Forest Service facility provides a classic mountain camping experience. Unlike modern luxury resorts, this location focuses on the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Visitors can expect a tranquil environment shaded by Jeffrey pines and fir trees, making it a favorite for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the outdoors.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is conveniently positioned only ten minutes north of downtown Truckee, providing a perfect balance between wilderness immersion and town access. At an elevation of approximately 5,700 feet, the air is crisp and scented with pine. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the reservoir, which provides a calm backdrop for sunrise views. Because it is tucked away from the main highways, the site enjoys minimal traffic noise, ensuring that the sounds of nature remain the primary soundtrack for your stay.
Amenities & Park Features
Tahoe/Prosser is designed for dry camping enthusiasts, meaning there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available at the individual sites. However, the park provides essential features for a comfortable stay:
- Vault toilets and shared potable water spigots
- Heavy-duty picnic tables and steel fire rings at every site
- Access to a public boat ramp for water entry
While the internal roads can be narrow, many sites accommodate trailers and motorhomes up to 35 feet, making it a viable option for many mid-sized rigs.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water activities are the primary draw here, with easy access to the reservoir for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing for rainbow or brown trout. Land-based explorers will appreciate the proximity to the Commemorative Overland Emigrant Trail, which offers miles of scenic hiking and mountain biking. Just a short drive away, the historic streets of Truckee offer local boutiques and dining, while the stunning shores of Lake Tahoe are reachable in under thirty minutes.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize quiet evenings and trail access over resort-style amenities. It is a fantastic choice for mountain bikers and anglers who want to be steps away from their next adventure. If you enjoy a rustic, forest setting and have the battery capacity to spend a few days off-grid, Tahoe/Prosser serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring the High Sierra without the crowds found at more developed lakeside parks.

There are no hookups here. They don't have any water. Most of the time you cannot have a campfire. It's a very basic camping site.

Nice spot and friendly people. The views nearby are great. You can walk to the reservoir easily and have quick access to the Everline Resort area.

A wonderful experience at prosser family campground with my friends I for my birthday! While it was a stormy weekend and lots of lightning and thunderstorms we had a great time! The grounds were kept clean, the host was super nice and allowed us to take wood before even having the cash to give him which was SO thoughtful with little ones, we later got cash in town to give him. The bathrooms are pretty well stocked it has just been a while since it was serviced to be cleared out which can be expected sometimes during the busiest season. Over all it was a nice campground and my friends favorite to come and visit. Will come back again and would recommend for anyone wanting a less busy campground and is close to town to buy groceries or fishing license.

We’ve stayed here on a couple of different nights. It’s reasonably priced and the amenities are clean. We loved the massive sites and it’s far enough off the highway that it’s very peaceful and quiet. It can get quite cold at night even in the middle of the summer.

Took my son here with my dad for his first camping trip. Had an RV, it was a nice place, grounds were well kept and it was quiet. Limited facilities and no easy path to the lake would be the only issues.
