Tahoe/Sardine

Overview

Tahoe/Sardine refers to the collection of forest service campgrounds near the majestic Sierra Buttes in the Tahoe National Forest. This destination is a haven for those who seek a genuine connection with nature, offering a peaceful retreat away from the crowds. Nestled in a rugged landscape of granite peaks and alpine lakes, this area provides a classic mountain camping experience that highlights the raw beauty of Northern California's high country. The area is renowned for its pristine environment, where the air is crisp and the night skies are filled with an incredible density of stars.

Location & Surroundings

Located just outside Sierra City, CA, the campgrounds are situated in the stunning Lakes Basin Recreation Area. The elevation here creates a cool, refreshing atmosphere even in the height of summer. The surrounding terrain is dominated by dense pine forests and the jagged profile of the Buttes, while the crystal-clear waters of Lower Sardine Lake provide a breathtaking focal point for visitors arriving in the region. The proximity to the Gold Lake Highway makes it accessible yet feels worlds away from the urban sprawl of the Central Valley.

Amenities & Park Features

These sites are designed for traditionalists and offer a rustic setting without modern hookups. Visitors can expect vault toilets and seasonally available piped water at most locations. Each site typically includes a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring for evening campfires. Travelers should come prepared with self-contained units, as there are no sewer or electrical connections available at these sites. The lack of digital distractions allows campers to fully immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the Sierra Nevada wilderness.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is around every corner, with the challenging hike to the Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout being a primary draw for active travelers. Anglers will find excellent fishing opportunities at Sardine Lakes, while families often gather at the shallow, sandy shores of Sand Pond for swimming and relaxing. The nearby Pacific Crest Trail offers endless miles of exploration for dedicated hikers. Furthermore, the historic town of Sierra City offers a charming glimpse into the region's gold rush history with its quaint storefronts and local dining options.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for boondockers and dry campers who value scenery over luxury amenities. It is a perfect fit for outdoor enthusiasts, including hikers, photographers, and fishers who want direct access to the backcountry. If your travel style involves unplugging and reconnecting with the great outdoors in a serene, high-elevation environment, these campgrounds provide the ultimate basecamp for your Sierra City adventures. It is best suited for those who appreciate the quiet simplicity of the national forest.

Pleasant little place. Great view with the lake and sierra buttes rising behind it. Good stop after the Sierra buttes lookout hike.

An absolute gem. Grew up going here and despite having more visitors still retains its charm.

Been going here every year since I was a baby. This place is a hidden gem in the Sierra's with an amazing view of the Sierra Buttes. They have good fishing and boat rental prices are reasonable. Unfortunately I haven't been able to stay IN their cabins for several years because they are usually always booked up, but I go camping in the area and always come here to fish and relax.

A must see place tucked away in Sierra foothills. Great spot to fish and build great memory’s. Upper sardine lake is beautiful and worth the drive (MUST HAVE 4X4) the hike is just as beautiful. They have small boats that you can rent and enjoy a day of fishing.
