Tahoe/Union Flat

Overview

Tahoe/Union Flat offers a serene mountain retreat tucked within the lush landscape of the Tahoe National Forest. Situated along the North Fork of the Yuba River, this Forest Service campground provides an authentic outdoor experience far from the noise of the city. Travelers come here to reconnect with nature, enjoying the shade of towering trees and the refreshing river breeze that defines this historic region of Northern California. It is a place where the scenery takes center stage over modern infrastructure.

Location & Surroundings

Located just six miles east of the historic town of Downieville on Highway 49, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 3,400 feet. The surroundings are characterized by a dense forest of Douglas fir and incense cedar, creating a secluded atmosphere that feels miles away from civilization. The proximity to the North Fork of the Yuba River is the main draw, where the sound of rushing water provides a constant, peaceful backdrop for campers tucked into the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service site, Tahoe/Union Flat focuses on simplicity and natural beauty. The park offers primitive camping without the distraction of hookups, electricity, or Wi-Fi. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, while shared vault toilets and potable water spigots are available throughout the grounds. It is important to note that the sites are best suited for smaller rigs or van conversions, as the narrow paved loops and site lengths may be difficult for large motorhomes to navigate.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure seekers will find plenty to do just minutes away from their campsite. The nearby town of Downieville is world-renowned for its mountain biking trails, including the famous Downieville Downhill. Anglers can enjoy fly fishing for trout in the Yuba River, while hikers can explore the nearby Lakes Basin Recreation Area or sections of the Pacific Crest Trail. For history buffs, the gold-rush era architecture of Downieville and Sierra City offers a fascinating glimpse into California’s rugged mining past.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained travelers who appreciate a rustic atmosphere over modern resort luxuries. It is a perfect fit for outdoor enthusiasts, specifically mountain bikers and fly-fishers, who want a basecamp close to the action. If you prefer the smell of pine needles and the sound of a babbling river to the hum of air conditioners and televisions, Tahoe/Union Flat provides the quiet, rugged experience you are looking for in the Sierras.

This place was BREATHTAKING. When we arrived we found the whole place completely empty. We came on a Friday morning. It got a little busy later on in the day however, the other campers were very respectful and quiet. The river is a must see! It can be a little loud but my husband and I really enjoyed the sound. The bathrooms were very clean and smelled nice.

It's a nice campground if you have a good campsite. I don't recommend site 4. It's very small and the tent spot is next to a culvert. Be prepared for mosquitos they were bad. Also no cell phone service or internet. The bathroom is very dark during the day so bring a flashlight .

So lucky to happen gotten a spot here! We had plenty of room with our SUV and 17' camper trailer, but we were in the largest spot available. Other spots are fairly small, some right on the river. Downieville is incredibly cute to explore. Bring your mountain bike, fishing gear, and gold panning stuff.

This review is knowing that there is no water or fires allowed. #11 is by far the best site to be next to the river. on the rec.gov site it says you need to hike to campsite...this is not true, you can park at the site. All the sites are really nice and the ones along the river you can hear the water. The noise from the road was minimal. The fish were most active at dusk. We could see them jumping and tail flips but no dice. Saw a few day use groups panning for gold between sites #10 & #11. A pro tip is there is no gas station at Downieville or Sierra City. The last gas station is at the Lost Nugget until Bassets CA which is about 40 miles.
