Tahoe/Woodcamp

Overview

Woodcamp Campground offers a quintessential Sierra Nevada experience located on the scenic shores of the Boca Reservoir. Operated within the Tahoe National Forest, this facility provides a rugged, rustic escape for those looking to bypass crowded commercial resorts. Open seasonally from late spring through early autumn, it serves as a peaceful haven where visitors can immerse themselves in a natural forest setting while enjoying the cool mountain air and expansive night skies. It is a place where the landscape dictates the pace of your stay.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just a short drive east of Truckee, California, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 5,600 feet. The surrounding landscape is a beautiful blend of Jeffrey pines and high-desert sagebrush, offering a mix of shaded sites and open vistas. Its proximity to the water makes it a prime spot for watching the sun rise over the reservoir. The area provides easy access to Interstate 80, making it a convenient yet secluded stop for travelers exploring the High Sierra region.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service site, the focus at Woodcamp is on simplicity and immersion in nature. You will find paved parking spurs and heavy-duty picnic tables at each site, along with fire rings for evening gatherings. While there are no hookups available for RVs, the park provides essential vault toilets and potable water via shared spigots. To ensure safety in wildlife country, the park features sturdy bear-resistant food lockers, which are a requirement for all campers staying in the Tahoe region.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities right at their doorstep. The reservoir is a popular hotspot for boating, fishing, and windsurfing, with a convenient boat ramp located nearby at the dam. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the surrounding terrain is filled with mountain biking trails and hiking paths that wind through the Tahoe National Forest. If you crave a bit of civilization, historic downtown Truckee is nearby, offering a charming selection of local dining and boutique shopping.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize natural beauty and outdoor recreation over modern resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for anglers, kayakers, and those looking to disconnect from digital life for a few days. The manager was very helpful and kind to our questions and services. We rented a fireplace and he was very helpful and checked up on us if we need anything. Hiking trails are great and very beautiful

Nice but expensive for tent camping. 45$ nite . 60 for RVs which is reasonable.

Quiet campsites close to town in the middle of a neighborhood. Some RV sites would struggle with longer rigs. Will definalty be back.

I camped here for 3 nights in May 2025. A clean comfortable campsite, the perfect location with lots of trees, a beautiful creek, amazing hiking trails with some that back up to National forests, and you can see many stars at night. There are great mountain bike trails too (did not have my bike on this trip). The campsite is comfortable and spacious, I was using my two man tent on this trip. There are restrooms, with showers and a sink outside the restrooms to wash your dishes. The camp hosts were friendly, helpful and flexible. When the campsites weren't full yet in the early season they had a great recommendations for a site right next to the creek and swapped my reservation. They provided useful information on the campground, hiking trails and the surrounding area. Downtown Truckee is a short drive away if needed (12 minutes). I highly recommend this campground and plan to stay here again.

Stay at this campground if you have no other option or only tent camping. None the RV sites are level. We couldn't get level at our assigned site (11). The second site was an improvement, but not even close to being level. The next day another motorhome parked in #11. The front jacks were on blocks, the tires were lifted 8, inches off the ground. The bathrooms were not clean. A dryer sheet remained under the bench for three days. We won't be staying here again.
