Tangle Lakes (BLM)

RV Park

Overview

Overview

Tangle Lakes (BLM) is a quintessential Alaskan wilderness campground situated along the iconic Denali Highway. This location offers a remote and rugged experience far removed from the noise of typical commercial RV parks. As a Bureau of Land Management site, it focuses on providing access to the pristine landscape, making it a perfect spot for travelers seeking a secluded natural setting. Expect a peaceful stay defined by expansive views, crisp mountain air, and the authentic stillness of the interior Alaskan tundra.

Location & Surroundings

Located near Paxson, Alaska, Tangle Lakes sits at Mile 22 of the Denali Highway. This remote location is highly valued by travelers navigating one of the most scenic drives in the United States. The surrounding area is dominated by glacially carved valleys and high-altitude plateau scenery. Because of its isolated position, it is vital to arrive with adequate fuel and supplies, as the landscape is wild and largely undeveloped, offering unmatched opportunities for quiet, stargazing, and wilderness observation.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is designed for those who enjoy a true back-to-basics lifestyle. It features dry camping sites suitable for tents and smaller RVs, though large rigs should exercise caution due to road conditions. Facilities are limited to pit toilets and fire rings, meaning travelers must be entirely self-sufficient. There are no electrical or water hookups, so ensure your batteries and tanks are ready before you arrive. It is a primitive site that prioritizes environmental preservation over modern convenience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw of this area is the immediate access to the Tangle Lakes system, which is a premier destination for kayaking and canoeing. Anglers frequent the waters here, known for arctic grayling and other local fish species. Additionally, the area serves as a gateway for hikers looking to explore the rolling hills and tundra trails. Photographers and wildlife enthusiasts often head here to capture images of caribou, moose, and the dramatic shifting weather patterns over the Alaskan Range.

Who This Park Is Best For

Tangle Lakes is ideal for off-grid adventurers and experienced boondockers who are comfortable without standard utility connections. If you are traveling via truck camper or van and prefer solitude over amenities, this site will feel like a dream. It is not designed for families seeking resort-style activities, but it is perfect for those who want to disconnect from technology and immerse themselves in the raw, untamed beauty of the Alaskan interior.

Great campground. It's really clean with big spots for trailers and RVs. There are even dirt/grass platforms for tents. There's a lake which is the headwaters of the Delta River and a great place for a multi day raft trip.

Nice campground. Clean bathrooms. Scenic. Good fishing lake saw some guys heading out to flyfish for some lake trout. Extremely windy for our one night stay so couldn't take advantage of everything this area had to offer. We did fill our water bottles up.

Great campground, we can only recommend. The host is also super nice. Wildlife close by 😉 and direct access to the lake.

Such a beautiful campground! We camped here twice this summer and it’s one of our new favorites. There’s a boat launch for those who have boats or water toys. There are no hookups or dump stations here. Spots vary in length and size, they all have fire pits and picnic tables. Outhouses were clean and the campground maintained. I recommend checking out Tangle Lakes Lodge, really good pizza, and McLaren Lodge. The drive is insanely stunning. One of our favorite campgrounds now!

First come, first serve campground. Around 40 sites in two areas. Great access to the lake for boating and fishing. Several restrooms that are well taken care of. Highly recommend on a trip over the Denali Highway.
