Tenkiller Ferry Lake - COE/Snake Creek

Overview

Snake Creek is a premier Corps of Engineers destination located on the serene eastern shores of Tenkiller Ferry Lake. Known for its remarkably clear blue water and rugged shoreline, this park offers a peaceful escape into nature. Visitors often come for the picturesque sunrises and the opportunity to disconnect while staying in a well-maintained federal recreation area that prioritizes the natural landscape over commercial flash. It is a staple for those seeking the authentic Oklahoma outdoors experience.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of the Cookson Hills in northeastern Oklahoma, the park is surrounded by dense forests and rocky limestone bluffs. The location in Cookson provides a quiet, rural atmosphere that feels miles away from the bustle of city life. The surrounding terrain is characterized by the winding shores of Tenkiller Ferry Lake, providing campers with easy access to one of the most scenic and deepest bodies of water in the entire region.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features several sites equipped with 50-amp electric hookups, catering to modern RV needs while maintaining a rustic vibe. Campers have access to essential facilities including a dump station, hot showers, and flush toilets. For those bringing watercraft, the park offers a convenient multi-lane boat ramp and a courtesy dock. Families frequently enjoy the on-site playground and the designated swim beach area, which provides a safe spot for cooling off during the peak of summer.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Because the lake is often called the Scuba Capital of Oklahoma, many visitors spend their time scuba diving at the dedicated underwater park found nearby. Fishing is another major draw, with the lake being famous for smallmouth bass and the nearby Illinois River offering world-class trout fishing opportunities. For a day trip, Tenkiller State Park is just a short drive away, offering paved hiking trails and an interpretive center that explains the local ecosystem and history.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for boating enthusiasts and anglers who want to be just steps away from the water. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a traditional camping experience where the focus is on outdoor exploration rather than resort-style entertainment. If you prefer a quiet atmosphere and the simplicity of a COE park, Snake Creek provides a high-quality, nature-first environment for your next RV adventure in the Sooner State.

Great place to camp. Beautiful views. Plug-ins at every site. Water spickets everywhere. Clean. Relaxing time. Rv or tent camp.

Overall, we had a good trip. The staff is very nice. The grass needs maintenance and is over run with sand burrs, making it a painful experience for our dog and my fingertips picking out dozens of stickers. Stay off the grass if you don’t have shoes and keep your dogs in the concrete.

I have been going to this campground since I was little and have always loved it, and still do! Our campsite was nice, shaded and quiet. I will say that the campground is a little more run down and needs upgrading. The restrooms and shower house were very dirty and needs updated horribly! The grass needed mowing and the swimming area walkway was overgrown with weeds.

Not enough trash cans. Trash was overflowing, women's restroom was reduced to one toilet after second one was clogged-up. Employees didn't provide any guidance upon arrival as to the safeguarding of children or quiet hours. Campsites were overgrown. The experience as a whole would have been better if there had been a sense of anticipation of visitors on Memorial weekend.
